The 2010 Greenroofs of the World 12-Month Wall Calendar will be available soon! Our 11" x 18" full-color glossy 2010 Calendar will be full of beautiful living roof projects from all over the world once again. In the 2009 Greenroofs of the World 12-Month Wall Calendar: October features the " Multi-Structured WA Private Residence" in Port Townsend, Washington, USA.
This private home
sits within an old growth spruce forest near the Olympic National Forest. Green roofs cover all structures including
the garage, sauna, study, breezeway, and living spaces. The sweeping building
design contains dynamic roof angles necessitating a flexible green roof
solution provided by Xero Flor's XF301 prevegetated mat assemblies for the
structured complex of roof microhabitats. Do you want your project included in future Greenroofs of the World Wall Calendars? Click here for more information. |

London, UK Green spaces 'improve health' BBC News, by Staff There is more evidence that living near a 'green space' has health benefits. Research in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health says the impact is particularly noticeable in reducing rates of mental ill health. The annual rates of 15 out of 24 major physical diseases were also significantly lower among those living closer to green spaces. One environmental expert said the study confirmed that green spaces create 'oases' of improved health around them. [10.15.09]
U.S. Pitt awarded for Orleans project BBC News, by Staff Film star Brad Pitt has been presented with an award recognising the green credentials of his housing project in New Orleans. The actor, who was at Bill Clinton's Global Initiative summit in New York, said the project, set up in 2007, has "exceeded my expectations". The houses have environmentally friendly features such as green roofs. Green roofs help cut the costs of heating and keep the houses cool during New Orleans' hot summers. [9.25.09]

U.S. 'Green' roofs may help put lid on global warming EurekAlert, Press Release Green roofs, those increasingly popular urban rooftops covered with plants, could help fight global warming, scientists in Michigan are reporting. Kristin Getter and colleagues point out in the new study that green roofs are multi-functional. They reduce heating and air conditioning costs, for instance, and retain and detain stormwater. Researchers knew that green roofs also absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, but nobody had measured the impact until now. [9.23.09]

The Inaugural CitiesAlive! - Seeds of Success - The first
World Green Roof Infrastructure Congress was held in Toronto last week and was
very informative and a delight to attend. Speaker sessions were varied and
complemented our international community of greenroof professionals nicely. All
the networking events, including the tours, were well planned - the organizers
had a lot on their plate but managed to execute all with global flair and
flavor!
Rooftop Hopping in Metro Atlanta - Join me for a day of
crisscrossing downtown Atlanta and then heading up north to the suburbs as I
accompany a SCAD student director and his crew. We filmed atop four rooftops, including
Atlanta City Hall, but were able to film at least three others, as the views
were spectacular on this beautiful day.
CitiesAlive! World Green Roof Infrastructure Congress - A World of Reasons to Come to Toronto - I highlight the many reasons to join other
greenroof colleagues in the beautiful, international city of Toronto for the
inaugural World Green Roof Infrastructure Congress. Steven Peck tells us how
this Congress is different from the Greening Rooftops for Sustainable
Communities Conference, and why people should attend.

Clive
Greenstone writes about "The eThekwini Municipality Green Roof Pilot Project" in Durban, South Africa. Clive proposes there is growing consensus that the
future is in cities and the drive to change these urban forms into more
sustainable ecological spaces is a necessity. Read how city spaces need to be re-conceptualized and restructured - buildings with suitable roof structures
could be developed into a network of green spaces to provide a mixture of urban
food security through both container gardening and/or extensive rooftop
gardens.
