Boston is such a great city, and this year Greenbuild out did itself! Last week we visited the Trade Show floor on Wednesday and enjoyed a lovely lunch sponsored by Tecta America
where we had an opportunity for a questions and answers session. We heard from Angie Durhman, Tecta's Green Roof Specialist, John Shepley of Emory Knoll Farms
, and Craig Silvertooth of CEIR
. Afterwards we tried to stop by all our colleagues' booths as well as see all the new and exciting environmentally friendly products out there.
Sky Gardens WebTV Series:
On Thursday and Friday we were in New York filming our second episode of Sky Gardens, highlighting the Cook+Fox
Architects corporate offices in Manhattan. We interviewed architect Mark Rusitzky about this fascinating skyrise greenroof and Rohit Aggarwala, the director of the New York City Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability and chief architect of PlaNYC. More info later!

The greenroof lies over a section devoted to presidential artifacts, and over 150 plant species cover the area, which also includes a putting green for the former President.
Autodesk/AIA: Autodesk, Inc. and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the
results of the 2008 Autodesk/AIA Green Index at Greenbuild Expo in Boston. In
the greenroof arena, according to the survey 34 percent of architects are now
implementing green or vegetated roof coverings on more than half of their new
projects, compared with 7 percent of architects in 2007. Read "Green Index

USGBC: USGBC is accepting proposals for educational sessions for Greenbuild 2009.
Sessions should reflect the program theme of Main Street Green: Connect to the
Conversation. [11.21.08] Also, the USGBC invites the public to comment on the
LEED for Neighborhood Development Rating System which integrates the principles
of smart growth, new urbanism and green building into the first national system
for neighborhood design. The program is a collaborative effort between USGBC,
the Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Sustainable Sites Initiative Draft 2008: The Sustainable Sites Initiative (an interdisciplinary effort by the American
Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and
the United States Botanic Garden) released the Guidelines and Performance
Benchmarks Draft 2008 for public comment. Building on their preliminary report,
the new draft contains over 50 proposed prerequisites and credits ranging from
site selection to sustainable maintenance practices. [11.18.08]
Groundwork Sheffield: Groundwork Sheffield announces a new on-line resource for the UK green roof
sector called Green Roofs Today. Developed through discussion with industry
professionals and in response to the upwards of 1,000 enquiries Groundwork
receives every year, it will incorporate Green Roof News, a sector specific
e-newsletter and will also feature a comprehensive Green Roof Register of UK
green roof and related industry professionals. [10.31.08]
Green roofs hold key to sustainability
Spanish researchers from the Polytechnic University of
Madrid (UPM) are trialling a third-generation ecological roof using indigenous
plants in a bid to make buildings more sustainable while retaining visual attraction
along with a watering system designed to optimize insulation effects.

Portland has grants for more ecoroofs
James Mayer of OregonLive.com says the Bureau of
Environmental Services began offering grants for new ecoroofs last month but
has received only a handful of applications. The city has $360,000 in grants
for this fiscal year, and a committee reviews applications and awards grants quarterly.
The grant application deadline for this quarter is Dec. 1. [11.20.08]
Time Running to Get DC to Pay for Your Green Roof
NBC Washington reports that the deadline is looming for residents
who want to participate in the city's green roof program, due by January 15,

Hurricane Katrina was a sobering example of urban dependency
on outsourcing food and delivery services. The concept of "Locavory," the
sustainable concept of eating locally, is introduced along with how living roofs can
promote it if space is provided for local organic gardens. Margaret Lowman of

DM applies 'Green Roofs' initiative on its buildings
AMEInfo: Dubai Municipality has embarked on an initiative called
'Green Roofs' during the recent Green Dubai Forum. Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah,
Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, said they launched the
initiative in line with the law on the application of green building
specifications in Dubai. The Green Roofs project aims at transforming the roofs
of all buildings and houses in Dubai to cultivated space, where the water from
air-conditioners should be used for irrigation of plants. [11.05.]
