Fight climate change by turning roof
green
The International Herald Tribune's Kimberly Conniff

Read Linda's Recommended Readings review of
"BUILDING GREENer - Guidance on the
use of green
roofs, green walls and complementary features on
buildings (C644)", by Paul Early, Dusty Gedge,
John Newton, and Steve Wilson, 2007 from CIRIA,
London, England.
Once again from the United Kingdom comes another
must-have advice and guide book to be added to our
green building reference arsenal. Published by CIRIA,
the Construction Industry Research and Information
Association - a not for profit UK organization
which "manages collaborative research and produces
information aimed at providing best practice solutions
to industry problems" - the book is written by well
known and respected environmental design leaders.
John Newton hails from Ecology Consultancy, Dusty
Gedge and Paul Early from Livingroofs.org, and Steve
Wilson from EPG.

Ralph Velasquez, our former ASTM
Editor, has
expanded his horizons and will now contribute as the
Sustainable Roofing Technologies Editor! What's
that, you ask? Look for his new column in early
April.
Did you read the Green Wall column from George
Irwin, entitled "An Intro to Green Walls and Green Roofs:
Living Architecture at its Best? " George
writes, "Since
the days of Babylon, vegetation has been growing on,
in or around both the horizontal and vertical planes of
buildings, more specifically the roofs and walls." The
greenroof movement has naturally evolved to include
green walls, and George shows us how "the green
roof has now literally climbed over the parapet and
down, or up the walls."
Exclusive Feature:
Commemorating a True Greenroof Pioneer, Leader,
and Friend in Dr. David Beattie. We
were very sorry to report on the passing of well
respected and beloved Dr. Dave Beattie; read
comments from some of our contributing editors
here.
Christine Thuring, our student Editor and Dr.
Dave's
former Penn State student says, "If you have any
anecdotes or memories about David Beattie that you
would like to share, a special Forums page on which
to commemorate Dave has been created. Follow this
link, and you'll find the thread under General
Greenroof Discussion." Readers have been sending
in their photos of Dave, so send us yours, too, for
posting.
Speaking of Christine, take a quick Survey:
This fall 2008, Green Roof Safari, organized by Jörg
Breuning and Christine Thuring, will visit a
kaleidoscope of green roofs from Frankfurt to Zürich -
institutional, commercial & residential,
Hundertwasser, biodiversity, solar panel integrations,
alternative materials, old and new installations, and
they want just a few minutes of your time. Fill out
the "European Green Roof Tours Survey" and
help Green Roof Safari fulfill your interests and
needs!
