EPA:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
with state and national partners, released a
comprehensive plan to reduce runoff and increase
environmental and economic benefits for
communities. The strategy will help reduce
stormwater runoff and sewer overflows by
promoting "green infrastructure" approaches,
including greenroofs. Read "Managing Wet Weather
with Green Infrastructure Action Strategy 2008."
[01.17.08]. Also, the EPA
released "Reducing Stormwater Costs through Low
Impact Development (LID) Strategies and Practices" -
a report providing information to cities, counties,
states, private-sector developers and others on the
costs and benefits of using Low Impact Development
(LID) strategies and practices to help protect and
restore water quality, including greenroofs [12.07].
A new UK
Livingroofs alliance: Great Britain has
expanded rapidly with huge interest in the benefits of
greenroofs and Livingroofs.org, an independent UK
website and research centre set up to promote
greenroofs, has been the main focal point for the
dissemination of information and advice. Yet,
Livingroofs.org is evolving into a formal greenroof
alliance to be known as The National Livingroofs
Association. To facilitate the next steps,
Livingroofs.org is forming a partnership with The
Green Roof Centre in Sheffield. [01.08].

the US, requiring all public buildings be built to green
standards beginning in 2008 and all new private
buildings larger than 50,000 sf by 2012. DC
Greenworks' apprenticeship program is cited.

Read Linda's new Recommended Readings
review of "Rain
Gardens - Managing water sustainably in the garden
and designed landscape," by Nigel
Dunnett and Andy Clayden, Timber Press, Portland,
OR, 2007.
In our changing global climate, water is increasingly
becoming a limited world resource, and
ecologically-informed designers, government officials
and
homeowners are imperative in order to promote and
protect the health and lasting beauty of our
landscapes. Sustainable design is responsible
design, and as we continue exploring ways to lessen
our developmental impacts on Earth, it is especially
important to celebrate those methods which are
relatively low-tech and affordable to maximize their
implementation.
Nigel and Andy have written a timely, no-nonsense
practical offering to
enlighten and satisfy both the domestic and public
sectors about how to make the most of rainwater
with "Rain Gardens - Managing water sustainably in
the garden and designed landscape..."
