    Environment: Majora Carter
    Newsweek's Karen Breslau introduces us to Majora Carter, social and environmental pioneer who created Sustainable South Bronx, an organization dedicated to ensuring poor communities of healthy, responsible design. Carter helped design the greenroof on its headquarters and has initiated a "green collar" greenroof installation job-training program. Read how Carter received a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" to continue her work. [12.25.06 - 1.01.07]

    Taking the high ground
    nelsonmail.co.nz relates how the landscaping, including the tussock-covered roofs, became a labor of love for Philip Woollaston and his staff at the Woollaston Estates winery. Philippa Foes-Lamb reporting. [12.15.06]

    Seattle, WA
    New rules: parking spaces optional
    Sharon Pian of the Seattle Times says the city council passed the "Seattle Green Factor" to require all new development in commercial zones outside of downtown to cover 30 percent of the property with grass, trees, green roofs with vegetation, vine-covered walls or permeable paving. Councilman Steinbrueck believes Seattle would be the first city in the nation to impose such a requirement." [12.12.06]

    Port Coquitlam, Canada
    Look, up in the sky, it's green
    According to Lara Gerrits of the Coquitlam Tri City News, the Port Coquitlam council is looking to inject some green into the grey concrete of new development. The "PoCo" council is expected to give final approval to a first-of-its-kind bylaw mandating that all new commercial and industrial buildings with a footprint larger than 5,000 square metres (or 53,821 square feet) have a greenroof.     Portland challenges Chicago with ecoroofs
    Senior Policy Director Maria Thi Mai says that more than 100 ecoroof enthusiasts joined with commissioner Sam Adams, representatives of the fledging ecoroof industry, and citizens of Portland to help chart the next course for the advancement of Ecoroofs in Portland.     The World Green Roof Infrastructure Network was officially launched from Berlin on December 15, 2006. The WGRIN brings together more than 15 green roof professional associations on four continents. Dr. Manfred Koehler, spokesperson for the new organization says, “Our mission is to promote the development of green roof infrastructure research, policy development and implementation in countries throughout the world through improved international co-operation.” Read the Press Release.
