    Fireman’s FundŽ First to Introduce Green Building Coverage
    Fireman’s Fund has worked closely with the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED program as well as the Green Building Initiative’s (GBI) Green Globes program to ensure that its coverage and upgrade options align with the industry’s major green certification processes. For buildings that are green certified by either group, Fireman’s Fund will cover sustainable building elements such as vegetated roofs. [10.13.06]

    Stroudsburg, PA
    Army says it's easier being green
    The Pocono Record's Jacqueline Boucher relates how Tobyhanna Army Depot environmentalists believe they are the first to plant a garden on the roof of a Department of Defense building. Funding from the Joint Services Initiative allowed depot officials to install a vegetative green roof on one wing of the headquarters building this summer. The Joint Services Initiative provides funding for projects that would save money, positively impact the environment and be transferable across the services. [10.01.06]


    Industry News

    The City of Chicago is once again offering a Green Roof Grant Program for Residential and Small Commercial Buildings, and their Department of Environment is giving an increased number of grants this year. Applications for the 2006 Program are open now and will close Friday, November 3, 2006. Successful projects will be announced in December 2006.     The City of Chicago is also promoting their "Vehicle Sticker Design Contest," and this year it's motto is “Green Scene Chicago.” All Chicago students in the ninth through 12th grade are invited to submit artwork highlighting the City of Chicago’s effort to become the most environmentally friendly city in the nation. The deadline is November 14. Read more.

    The Bronx Initiative for Energy and the Environment (BIEE) has created three separate partnership funds: The Bronx Partnership for Electric Transportation, the Bronx Partnership for Environmental Benefit, and the Bronx Partnership for Residential and Commercial Energy Efficiency and New Technology. The goal of the initiative is to demonstrate pathways to a greener Bronx, and the Bronx Environmental Revolving Loan Fund is designed to provide zero interest loans to Bronx businesses and building owners that implement energy efficient measures and/or new technology, including greenroofs.
