I'm Almost 65 - How Should I Prepare for Medicare?
turning 65More than 103,000 North Carolinians will turn 65 this year. Turning 65 is a lot like turning 16. When you turned 16, you didn't automatically get your driver's license; instead you had to take an exam and prove that you were a safe driver. There was a specific order and procedure for getting your driver's license, and the same is true for enrolling in Medicare for the first time when you turn 65.
Much like you anticipated turning 16 and getting your driver's license, you must anticipate and plan for becoming a Medicare beneficiary. Don't wait until you're 65 to start thinking about your Medicare choices. Start now and let SHIIP, the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program, help you.

medicare made easySHIIP, a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, provides free, unbiased information about Medicare and other insurance-related issues. There are SHIIP sites in all 100 counties in North Carolina.  SHIIP has created a handout meant to help you navigate the Medicare system and initial enrollment process. The handout, "The Road to Medicare," outlines the decisions you'll need to make and what options are available through the Medicare system. To obtain a free copy of "The Road to Medicare," call SHIIP at 1-800-443-9354 or visit SHIIP's website at www.ncshiip.com
You can also meet with a certified SHIIP Volunteer Counselor in your community to discuss your Medicare options. In Currituck County contact Olivia Jones, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent at the Currituck County Center of NC Cooperative Extension at 252-232-2261 or email olivia_jones@ncsu.edu .

It starts with gathering your thoughts and having a conversation lunch learn advwith your loved ones. Everyone will feel better knowing that a plan is in place and final wishes will be honored. Once the plan is in place, you and your family can focus on living in the moment and enjoying the blessings of the day. Let caring and trained professionals help you get started. Call 449-4500 to register. The Lunch & Learn Workshop will be held at the Cancer Resource Center (located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building, adjacent to the Outer Banks Hospital) at 4810 Croatan Highway, Suite 220, Nags Head, NC 27959.

Buy Fresh and Local at Tuesday's Hatteras Island Farmers' Market
hattaras market It was both a treat to the eyes and the taste buds at this past week's Farmers' Market. Plump blueberries, cantaloupe, watermelon and many varieties of squash, tomatoes, corn, green beans and beets were just a sample of fresh produce available. If you liked baked goods, there were fresh breads, tomato pies, cookies and scones. One could buy homemade granola, jams and salsa. Even North Carolina grass-fed beef was found at this week's market. Artisans displayed their functional wares such as aprons, cutting boards and glass lanterns. "Locals and visitors alike are enjoying the market," said Vicky Lowe who manages the weekly event. The summer market is held each Tuesday from 9 AM to 1 PM on the grounds of Hatteras Realty in Avon. Coastal Harvesters Inc. has sponsored the market for the past three years. It is a non-profit group dedicated to making fresh, local foods available to Outer Banks communities. The organization also operates the Hatteras Island Community Garden in Buxton.

Why do they come here? Outer Banks Voice interviews  international students
May 28, 2012
Why do they come here, these young people who leave friends, family and the familiarity of their country and language to visit our corner of the world? What do they love about the Outer Banks? What do they miss? Do they want to stay? How do they view our economy and endless political discussions?

The Dare Campus of College of The Albemarle has about 120 international students enrolled from 19 nations. They find us through word of mouth and employment agencies. And we wanted to know more about them.  Earlier this year, The Voice asked Teuta Shabani Towler to interview three of our visiting students about life in America and on the Outer Banks. Towler has been with the Voice from its inception, and she is uniquely qualified to conduct these interviews - coming to America from Kosovo.

Interview with Lyaysan Dunn
Interview with Lyaysan Dunn
Lyaysan Dunn comes from Ufa, Russia, which borders Kazakhstan. She studied foreign languages at the Russia State University. Most of the students in her major find their way to the United States.
She landed in Elizabeth City and found her way to Corolla, arriving on the temporary J-1 visa. Once on the Outer Banks, she enrolled at COA and obtained her student visa.

Since her arrival, Lyaysan has taken up boogie boarding, cycling and jogging on the beach. She wants to learn to surf, but admits to being "a little bit afraid of sharks," while vowing to "conquer my fear and go to the deep water" at some point. In Russia, soups are a primary dish and home cooking involves a lot of seasoning and spices not used here. She has correctly observed that stateside, soups are "secondary" dishes. The local fresh seafood is a favorite for her locally.

It hasn't taken her long to figure out the vagaries of a resort economy, noting "you can make good money in the summer, but in the winter it's a struggle for people. Most of us are unemployed."
Dunn has not decided if she will try to stay here when her studies are done; she has family and friends in Russia she misses. She does say our immigration is hard, but acknowledges and understands our reasons.  "After 9-11 it has been very rough for Americans. [Immigration] goes into many details of what we have done in Russia, and I guess it's a good thing [because of 9-11]. But it is a hard time if you want to stay here."
