Do You Have A Community Economic Development Idea?
saltwater connectionCommunity organizations and residents in the Saltwater Connections region are reminded that the final deadline for submitting community project proposals is July 15, 2012.

Saltwater Connections is a community-driven initiative within the 21 unincorporated communities located along the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway that seeks to strengthen the economic, social and ecological well-being of the communities while retaining the authentic heritage, character and quality of life that make each community a unique and special place to live, work and visit.

Proposed projects should support and facilitate job creation and retention, supplemental income generation, or small business development, and should address one or more recommendations in the Saltwater Connections Resource Team community reports.

The type of community projects Saltwater Connections is seeking include, but are not limited to, projects that address the needs of: nature-based, cultural and heritage tourism; commercial, charter and recreational fishing industries; business skills development or workforce training; developing value-added and new products; creating business models that can be replicated; developing branding, marketing and expansion of markets or supplies; creation of professional business plans; building on the local foods movement; creating or enhancing exhibits, events or other things to do, particularly in the shoulder season; promoting locally produced products or services; creating mentorship programs; enhancing youth entrepreneurship, providing a nationally recognized designation to a community or area; improving streetscape or signage; or using technology to connect entrepreneurs with markets. Saltwater Connections will not support projects where benefits accrue to only one individual or business.

Proposal guidelines and application form are posted on the Saltwater Connections website (www.saltwaterconnections.org) under the community project funds tab. Resource team community reports are also posted on the website.  For more information, Hatteras Island residents can contact Susan West, Hatteras Island coordinator for Saltwater Connections, at ridgeroad@earthlink.net or 252-995-4131.

I'm Almost 65 - How Should I Prepare for Medicare?
turning 65More than 103,000 North Carolinians will turn 65 this year. Turning 65 is a lot like turning 16. When you turned 16, you didn't automatically get your driver's license; instead you had to take an exam and prove that you were a safe driver. There was a specific order and procedure for getting your driver's license, and the same is true for enrolling in Medicare for the first time when you turn 65.
Much like you anticipated turning 16 and getting your driver's license, you must anticipate and plan for becoming a Medicare beneficiary. Don't wait until you're 65 to start thinking about your Medicare choices. Start now and let SHIIP, the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program, help you.

medicare made easySHIIP, a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, provides free, unbiased information about Medicare and other insurance-related issues. There are SHIIP sites in all 100 counties in North Carolina. It is recommended that you review your Medicare options before you need to enroll so that you don't make any hurried decisions at the last minute. Your Medicare choices will depend on several factors, including:
1. Are you retired, or will you or your spouse continue to work?
2. Will you have access to medical and/or prescription drug coverage through an Employer Group Health Plan?
3. How does your Employer Group Health Plan compare with Medicare supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans?

Of course there are other things to consider when determining your Medicare options. SHIIP has created a handout meant to help you navigate the Medicare system and initial enrollment process. The handout, "The Road to Medicare," outlines the decisions you'll need to make and what options are available through the Medicare system. To obtain a free copy of "The Road to Medicare," call SHIIP at 1-800-443-9354 or visit SHIIP's website at www.ncshiip.com.
You can also meet with a certified SHIIP Volunteer Counselor in your community to discuss your Medicare options. In Currituck County contact Olivia Jones, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent at the Currituck County Center of NC Cooperative Extension at 252-232-2261 or email olivia_jones@ncsu.edu .
