Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a 1,200 acre nature preserve managed by The Nature Conservancy, is currently experiencing significant shoreline erosion along the southern boundary of the preserve. The Town of Nags Head, a partner in the conservation efforts of Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, owns the 40-acre parcel experiencing a high rate of erosion and is concerned that the erosion will impact a historical access road and adjacent properties in the very near-term. We are undertaking a comprehensive ecosystem restoration pilot project to: 1) stabilize the high-bank shoreline and prevent further erosion using natural materials; 2) restore native maritime salt shrub, coastal marsh, and shallow water habitats 3) build ecosystem resilience to sea-level rise, and 4) demonstrate natural alternatives to hard shoreline stabilization to neighboring property owners.

A bit late this week. I spent a wonderful time in Seattle and Anacortes, Washington. Saw my beautiful niece married overlooking the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands (sunny with clouds); drove to Paradise on Mt Rainier (sunny); toured sites in Seattle (rainy); ate best Thai food ever; and United was more crowded than USAir. Note: The more you pay for a hotel the more likely you will have to pay for WiFi.
Glad to be home.

100 Years of Girl Scouts
Roanoke Island Festival Park and the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast have partnered in creating an exhibit celebrating the100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America. It can be seen in the Visitors Center at RIFP through July 1. The exhibit includes items from Mariner Girl Scouting, which was a special interest, water-based program for Girl Scouts that started in 1934. This division of Girl Scouts had unique blue uniforms and participated in activities such as charting courses, launching ships, and learning about water safety and boating. The Mariner Girl Scout program remains alive today through water-based badges, camps and activities.
The Wing Scouts are also featured which was another special program started for Senior Girl Scouts in 1942 with a focus on flying. Prior to becoming a Wing Scout, Senior Girl Scouts were expected to take a standard Red Cross First Aid Course and one related course in school, such as meteorology. Booklets were published as supplements to the Senior Girl Scout Handbook that outlined the program, suggested program activities, and provided technical aviation information. This program was discontinued in 1962 when changes were made to the Senior Girl Scout Interest Patches.
Brownie Girl Scouts, organized in 1916, are also represented in the exhibit. In 1951, the Girl Scouts of America published the first Brownie Scout Handbook. By the 1970's, the Brownie program, open to girls in the second and third grade, promoted activities to appeal to the imagination, curiosity, creativity, helpfulness and needs of girls ages 7-8 years old. Activities were based on the three Brownie B's: Be a Discoverer, Be a Ready Helper, and Be a Friend Maker. The Brownie Girl Scouts are still a very active part of scouting today.
