Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a 1,200 acre nature preserve managed by The Nature Conservancy, is currently experiencing significant shoreline erosion along the southern boundary of the preserve. The Town of Nags Head, a partner in the conservation efforts of Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, owns the 40-acre parcel experiencing a high rate of erosion and is concerned that the erosion will impact a historical access road and adjacent properties in the very near-term. We are undertaking a comprehensive ecosystem restoration pilot project to: 1) stabilize the high-bank shoreline and prevent further erosion using natural materials; 2) restore native maritime salt shrub, coastal marsh, and shallow water habitats 3) build ecosystem resilience to sea-level rise, and 4) demonstrate natural alternatives to hard shoreline stabilization to neighboring property owners.

Youth and Media The average teenager absorbs more than 10 hours of media a day - that's more than any other activity, including sleeping or going to school. The messages they receive from media teach them how to view themselves and others - particularly, what it means to be a woman or a man.
If you have ever seen a Super Bowl commercial, watched a music video, or heard a Top 40 song, then you know that mainstream media bombards children with messages that women should be beautiful and sexy, while men should be powerful and often violent. Messages like these can limit children's ideas of what is possible in the world, particularly the idea that women can be leaders. What your children learn from media can have damaging effects on their self-esteem and the way they treat others.
 | How media affects women - watch these commercials |
On Tuesday, May 15th, the OBX Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition with neighbors and friends viewed the documentary "Miss Representation", about media impact on young women. This powerful film calls for action.
If you are interested in taking action or learning more, become a 'Rep' in the Outer Banks Community. Reps receive special Action Alerts from MissRepresentation.org team every two weeks with specific instructions on how to further the cause of gender equity. Sample actions include: organizing meetings in your town, writing letters to your local papers, and activating communities online. Every Rep will receive a Social Action Kit - an in-depth guide with even more ways of getting involved.
Would you like to provide more leadership - we need a Rep Leader for the Outer Banks. Please contact me, nancy@obxcommonGood.org
