The Coalition is pleased to invite you - your neighbors and friends to join them in viewing the award-winning film, Miss Representation at Kelly's Restaurant on May 15th, 7:00 pm.

In one week American teenagers spend 31 hours watching TV, 17 hours listening to music, 3 hours watching movies, 4 hours reading magazines, 10 hours online. That's 10 hours and 45 minutes of media consumption a day.  "Miss Representation" criticizes mainstream media for broadcasting hyper-sexualized images of women on reality television and tabloid news, while simultaneously ignoring or trivializing female leaders.

Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom says :A dearth of positive portrayals of women in the media has helped cause a disproportionately low percentage of women in leadership positions in government and business, I'm a firm believer in 'If you can't see it, you can't be it. A more balanced public images of women would teach young girls that they can aspire to positions of power.

  • Women comprise 7% of directors and 13% of film writers in the top 250 grossing films.
  • The United States is 90th in the world in terms of women in national legislatures.
  • Women hold 17% of the seats in the House of Representatives (the equivalent body in Rwanda is 56.3% female).
  • Women are merely 3% of Fortune 500 CEOs.
  • About 25% of girls will experience teen dating violence.
  • The number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed on youth 18 or younger more than tripled from 1997 to 2007.
  • Among youth 18 and younger, liposuctions nearly quadrupled between 1997 and 2007 and breast augmentations increased nearly six-fold in the same 10-year period.
  • 65% of American women and girls report disordered eating behaviors.
  • Women hold only 3% of clout positions in the mainstream media (telecommunications, entertainment, publishing and advertising).

Miss Representation is Rated TV 14. It contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age. Parents are strongly urged to exercise greater care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended. This program intensely suggestive dialogue (D), and strong coarse language

    Sustaining Donations  needed and appreciated

The Film Series Coordinating Committee pays for film rights when ordering films. Our programs come with public performance rights, which is the right to show the film in public provided no admission fee is charged.  Reduced rates are offered to grass roots groups and others with small audiences and smaller budgets. A good portion of the price is returned to the producer in royalties, helping them to recoup production costs or invest in a new project. Films with public rights cost from $30.00 to $200. This cost is offset by contributions from Holy Redeemer by the Sea, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks, and individual donors like you.  Visit our website to learn more about the upcoming film as well as what else we have to offer.
