Alzeheimer's Disease:Legal Issues The Baum Senior Center in Kill Devil Hills, Tuesday May 15th at 3pm. There are many legal issues that should be considered when a loved one is stricken with Alzheimer's disease. Because the issues are sometimes complex and the regulations vary by state, it may be helpful to contact an elder law attorney for advice and counsel. GEM is pleased to announce that Jean-Louise Dixon will give an overview of legal issues and answer your questions on May 15, 2012. Families who have a loved one with dementia should take a look at legal and financial issues-the sooner, the better. Advance planning may enable individuals with dementia to provide input into the decision-making before loss of cognitive abilities prevents them from doing so. In addition, advance planning may relieve some of the burden on caregivers and other family members when important issues arise during the progression of the disease. The Town of Nags Head, a partner in the conservation efforts of Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, owns the 40-acre parcel experiencing a high rate of erosion and is concerned that the erosion will impact a historical access road and adjacent properties in the very near-term. We are undertaking a comprehensive ecosystem restoration pilot project to: 1) stabilize the high-bank shoreline and prevent further erosion using natural materials; 2) restore native maritime salt shrub, coastal marsh, and shallow water habitats 3) build ecosystem resilience to sea-level rise, and 4) demonstrate natural alternatives to hard shoreline stabilization to neighboring property owners.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) provides data on health-risk behaviors among 9th-12th grade students in the United States, including behaviors that contribute to injuries and violence; alcohol or other drug use; tobacco use; sexual risk behaviors; unhealthy dietary behaviors; and physical inactivity. YRBS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults. YRBSS includes a national school-based survey conducted by CDC and state, territorial, tribal, and local surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments. You can view 2009 results for North Carolina, other states, and the country by sex, gender, race, and grade.
The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including
Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection
Alcohol and other drug use Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity
YRBSS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults.
A component of the Dare County Health Assessment, the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted at Dare County High Schools showed that the average age of alcohol, tobacco and drug use onset occurs during the final two years of middle school or in the first year of high school. Parents are not always aware when children are using substances. While almost 70% of parents with children ages 9 - 19 surveyed do not think that their child is engaging in any high risk behaviors, approximately 75% of surveyed high school students reported use of alcohol, 50%reported use of marijuana and almost 45% reported use of cigarettes (2009 YRBS).
Note: National, state, and local YRBS 2011 results will be released in early summer of 2012.

"Miss Representation"
The OBXPeace and Justice Interfaith Coalition invites friends and neighbors to view the important documentary Miss Represenation. On Tuesday, May 15th, 7:00 at Kelly's. The film is 90 minutes long so we will be starting promptly. Rated TV-14DL, so while young people are very welcome, please keep that in mind. Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Outer Banks Hospital Hosts Free Skin Cancer Screening
Living on The Outer Banks means we are no stranger to sunshine. Residents and visitors spend a lot of time in the sun for work or recreation - or both. It's easy to lose track of time under the sun's rays. Sunscreen is an absolute necessity. The Outer Banks Hospital is hosting a free Skin Cancer Screening on Friday, May 18 from 10:00 am - 2:00 PM. If you have a spot or a mole that concerns you let Dr. Demetri Poulis or Dr. Timothy Cloninger take a look. Call 449-4500 to schedule your 15 minute appointment. Healthy snacks, skin cancer prevention information and sunscreen samples included. Start the summer with peace of mind, a clean bill of skin health and a renewed commitment to sun safety. | What to Expect at a Skin Cancer Screening |
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and accounts for almost half of all cancer cases in the United States. Your skin is the body's largest organ and serves as a barrier between bacteria and your internal organs. A visual skin screening doesn't take long. A physician will look for anything suspicious and make a follow-up recommendation. Signs to look for include any changes in your skin's appearance - such as a mole or new spot that appears. Look for scaliness, oozing or bleeding, or a change in appearance of a bump. Be sure you tell your physician if you notice changes in sensation such as itchiness, tenderness or if skin is painful to the touch. It's important to have the skin screening and almost necessary to have another person take a closer at the areas behind the arms or lower back. Julie Walter, from Nags Head, recently discovered she had skin cancer after noticing a change on her skin. She urges everyone to have annual skin cancer screenings.

Baby Shower
he Outer Banks Hospital's Labor & Delivery Department recently hosted a "Mock Baby Shower" sponsored by more than forty Girl Scouts from seven troops. Additionally, the girls crafted cards for new moms, enjoyed refreshments, toured The Outer Banks Hospital and learned how to give a baby CPR. Lisa McGaha, Director of L & D, commended the scouts on their generous spirit and the happiness and joy the baby items would bring to new moms in need.
The baby items will be distributed through The Dare County Department of Public Health's Baby Links program, headed by registered nurse Jill Liverman. The Outer Banks Hospital's Labor and Delivery Department serves as a drop off site for Baby Links donations. For information about dropping off items at the hospital for the Baby Links program contact Lisa McGaha at 449-5615.
