Bullying
There are two major documentaries out on Bullying. One is 'Bullied', distributed by Tolerance.org free to schools. Bullied is a documentary film that chronicles one student's ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies and offers an inspiring message of hope to those fighting harassment today. It can become a cornerstone of anti-bullying efforts in middle and high schools.
Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case That Made History
Bully: D irector Lee Hirsch started filming The Bully Project in 2009, At its center is the family of Tyler Long, a 17-year-old who had just recently hanged himself in a closet when filming started. It follows his anguished parents as they launch a community discussion of bullying in the wake of his death that it certainly appears the school doesn't want to have (they organize a town hall meeting, and plenty of kids and parents show up, but nobody from the school or the district). Bully will open in select theaters March 30th. The MPAA decided to give Bully an "R" rating, which will prevent many teens from seeing it.
BULLY
And finally - although not a movie on Bullying, an book - soon to be released movie, The Hunger Games, Rated PG 13. The Hunger Games is a young adult novel written by Suzanne Collins. published by Scholastic. It is about a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem. The Capitol, a highly advanced metropolis, holds absolute power over the rest of the nation. The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle in which only one person can survive. Collins says the idea for the brutal nation of Panem came one evening when she was channel-surfing between a reality show competition and war coverage. "I was tired, and the lines began to blur in this very unsettling way."
The Hunger Games Official Trailer 2012
I listened to this book last week. And it is indeed unsettling. Children killing Children, the ultimate televised survivor game. I understand this book is required reading in some of the middle schools. No offensive language, but it raises fundamental questions about the nature of human beings, society, and the disconnect between compassion and 'the other'. If your child is reading it, I recommend you read along. It is a conversation you will want to have.

Medicine Drop Off - Keep Our Waters Safe - March 22
Northern Outer Banks residents can do their part to keep our coastal waters, citizens and fish drug free.
The Dare County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with North Carolina Sea Grant, theN.C. Division of Marine Fisheries and the N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island, will host a community medicine drop-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 22. The event will be held at the aquarium at 374 Airport Road in Manteo. Sheriff's deputies will be on hand to collect the medications.
This effort will allow community members to dispose of unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications in a way that will not contaminate the water supply.
The unintended consequences of disposal of unwanted medicines represent an emerging concern for the aquatic environment and public health," says Sara Mirabilio, fisheries specialist at Sea Grant's Manteo office and event co-organizer.There is growing concern that flushing drugs may impact the coastal environment. The presence of these pharmaceuticals in our waterways have the potential to cause reproductive, behavioral, immune system and neurological problems, as well as cancerous tumors, not just in fish and shellfish, but also in birds, amphibians, reptiles and other coastal wildlife," Mirabilio adds.n.

First World Book Night in the Outer Banks
The Island Book store is coordinating this effort in the Outer Banks. The store in Kitty Hawk will prepare FIVE boxes of 20 copies of the same book. [The book selected will depend on availability of the World Book Night organization]. Givers will be responsible for any expenses incurred in picking up their carton and distributing the books. Authors are foregoing royalties to make this possible, and American book publishers, the American Booksellers Association, Barnes Noble, the American Library Association, the Association of American Publishers, Ingram Book Company, UPS, and a dozen printers and binders have paid for the production and shipping.
Non-profit groups who would like a box of books to distribute can contact Island BookStore. The five boxes will be reserved on a first come, first serve order. Please contact Meaghan Beasley, 252.255.5590, islandbksobx@yahoo.com
