Martin Luther King Jr Day in Currituck and Dare Counties
Several events are scheduled around Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year.
On Saturday, Jan. 14, and for the 21st year, a traditional program and luncheon will be held at the Dare Center, 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo. The program starts at 11 a.m. with lunch following. Rev. Spotswood Graves with the North Dare Ministerial Association issued an invitation to all at the recent board of commissioners meeting.
RESCUE MEN - The Story of the Pea Island Life-Savers
Join the Aquarium in celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month by sharing of the Pea Island Crew, led by Richard Etheridge. The Crew was the first to be made entirely of black men and proved to be one of the most courageous of the Life-Saving Service, the precursor of the precursor of today's U.S. Coast Guard. The movie will show on Monday, January 16, 2012 and each Sunday in February at 1:30pm and is free to the public. Afterwards, view the in-house exhibit dedicated to the Pea Island Life Savers, and visit the on-site memorial and gravesite of Richard Etheridge and his family. Warm up this winter with harrowing tales of courage and battles against the odds from Life-Saving Station #17. The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island will feature showings of Rescue Men, the documentary that chronicles the story of the all black crew of surfmen who patrolled a section of the Outer Banks in the late 1800s up to 1947.
The Aquarium gift shop will also have memorabilia about the life savers available for purchase. The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located at 374 Airport Road, Manteo, NC. For more information, please call 252-473-3494 or visit us on our website at www.ncaquariums.com/roanoke-island.
On Monday, Jan. 16, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island will offer visitors free admission when you bring food items for the Roanoke Island Food Pantry. The Roanoke Island Food Pantry has served all of Dare County and even Ocracoke, focusing on mainland Dare and Roanoke Island. Highly sought items include hearty soups and canned meats, but all non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated. We encourage families to bring a bag of food. The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located at 374 Airport Road, just north of Manteo. Visit the aquarium's web site www.ncaquariums.com for programming opportunities.
Also, Saturday through Monday, Jan. 14 through 16, are fee free days at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. The memorial is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Ranger talks in the Flight Room are given at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Jarvisburg prior to restoration
If you are driving on 158 this weekend, I encourage you
to stop and take another look at the Jarvisburg Colored School located in Powell's Point. Learn more about the important role this school played in educating African American children by reading the application for the school to become part of the national registry of historical places. According to Currituck County Board of Education Records, in 1965 the Board voted on the plan to desegregate all public schools by 1968.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the OBX Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition is sponsoring a showing of the documentary ``Standing on My Sisters' Shoulders'' on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant, MP 10.5 / 2316 S. Croatan Hwy., Nags Head. A missing chapter in our nation's record of the Civil Rights movement, this powerful documentary reveals the movement in Mississippi in the 1950's and 60's from the point of view of the courageous women who lived it - and emerged as its grassroots leaders.
One of the women, Unita Blackwell, is talks about the struggle to register to vote.
Unita Blackwell
At that time--June of 1964--only twenty thousand black people were registered to vote in the state of Mississippi. And not a single one of those lived in Issaquena County, way down in the toe of the Mississippi Delta, even though two-thirds of the folks in the county were black. Jeremiah and our seven-year-old son, Jerry, and I lived in a falling-down three-room house that had belonged to Jeremiah's grandmother. I was thirty-one years old, stuck in poverty, and trapped by the color of my skin on a rough road to nowhere, doing what Mississippi black people had been doing for generations--working in the cotton fields. I would've been out chopping cotton that day if two young fellows from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)--"Snick" they called it--hadn't come to town the week before, asking for volunteers to register to vote.
We hadn't been at the courthouse very long when Sheriff Darnell came strolling by. He stopped and rolled his eyes at us, like we were children acting up.
"What are y'all doing here?" The sheriff was playing dumb; he knew full well that the civil rights folks had been in town meeting with us.
"We come to register to vote," I said.
"Vote? What you think you gonna get out of that?"
"It's our right as Americans. The Constitution says so." I had already learned a lot from the civil rights guys.
STANDING ON MY SISTERS' SHOULDERS weaves a story of commitment, passion and perseverance and tells the story of the women fought for change in Mississippi and altered the course of American history forever. For additional information about the event or visit the website www.obxpeaceandjustice.org.
