Milepost
The stuck here on purpose really caught my attention. Loved it. What is it all about? I emailed Matt Walker and asked him what he was up to? (in a nice friendly way). Matt, the editor of Milepost, says it aims to be a straight-up resource for info and entertainment that shows Outer Banks life from an insider's perspective. We inform some. Rant some. Laugh plenty. But all of it reflects local values and flavor. Not only telling folks what they might have missed - but celebrating the unique elements we all willingly share. Think of it as a mirror that magnifies the Outer Banks' most quirky and compelling features to the world at large. Familiar or unfamiliar. Native, transplant or tourist. Readers will find something different each time they look." Outer Banks Milepost is available in local businesses from Corolla to Manteo (and occasionally beyond.) Check it out online.

Hospice Needs a Few Good Men

Imagine that you are a man at the end of your life. You are dependent on others for your needs. Your life has changed dramatically, and you are no longer in control. Your spouse and family have become your care providers, dignity and modesty are hard to maintain. You have things you would like to talk about without burdening your family. You are receiving Hospice Services to keep you pain free and comfortable and to help you meet your end of life goals. You have been offered Volunteer Services but the volunteers are all women.
You want your spouse to have a break; to have some time for herself. If the volunteer was a man, he would be able to connect with you and understand your journey differently than a woman would. Modesty would be less of a concern. That's why Hospice Needs a Few Good Men! For more information, call Tracy Bell, Volunteer Coordinator for Dare County Home Health and Hospice at 475-5057

REPORT ON NC 2-1-1

It is certainly an exciting time for NC 2-1-1. Due to the strong leadership of Jack Kenley, UWNC Board member and Vice President Group Markets at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, UWNC has received a significant grant to accomplish the following goals:
- Complete the statewide routing for all landlines in North Carolina (already completed)
- Complete the database for all North Carolina counties
- Assist with statewide marketing of the 2-1-1 service
The target date for completion of goals 2 and 3 is July 2012. I also have had a number of meetings and conversations with NC DHHS leadership. Most of you know that CARELINE, the state supported Human Services information and referral program, discontinued service on July 1, 2011 because it was not refunded by the state legislature. NC DHHS believes they do not need to be in the information and referral business and that NC 2-1-1 is the best alternative for all North Carolinians to access comprehensive health and human service information and referrals. Further, they have agreed to update governmental health and human service information for the NC 2-1-1 database. This is an exciting step forward for NC 2-1-1. Look for more updates at the discussions continue.
Currently, almost 80% of our population has 2-1-1 service. Our goal is to have 2-1-1 access for all North Carolinians!

Ribbon of Hope continued . . .
The goal of the program is to have a positive impact on the lives of North Carolina's citizens in each of the state's 100 counties. The Foundation will award mini-grants of $25,000 to North Carolina community-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. These grants will support activities that establish or expand local programs in health, science, and education to serve identified needs of local communities. In addition, grantees will benefit from technical assistance provided by the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits.
The Foundation supports programs that emphasize the understanding and application of health, science, and education to meet the needs of North Carolina's citizens and communities. In order to be considered, proposals should relate to the establishment and implementation of projects tightly aligned with the goals and objectives of local community agencies, demonstrate their sustainability after grant funds are expended and, most important, address critical community needs that have been identified through comprehensive needs assessment activities. Contact Carrie Germeroth at 303.632.5578 for more information.
