Teddy Bear Wellness at Children@ Play, spons0red by OB Hospital

Children often hear about a grandparent's or a sibling's trip to the Emergency Department or may even have accompanied the family without understanding what was happening or why.  The Outer Banks Hospital's Teddy Bear Wellness Hospital at the Children @ Play Museum in Kitty Hawk is designed to dispel anxiety.  The exhibit prepares children to go to the doctor and teaches them that it can be fun.  Children are encouraged to play the roles of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals as they learn that the hospital helps people in

the community become healthy.   Children become familiar with the items they see in the pediatrician's office and use their imaginations as they slip into a white lab coat and care for their teddy bear patients.

The Teddy Bear Wellness Hospital exhibit was sponsored by The Outer Banks Hospital, with a generous donation of building materials from Griggs Lumber and supplies from Pirate and Pixies Toy Store.

Dancing with Parkinsons
If  you or someone you know has Parkinson's disease you are not alone.  In the United States, 50,000-60,000 new cases of PD are diagnosed each year, adding to the one million people who currently have PD.  In fact, it is estimated that four to six million people around the world suffer from the condition. There is hope, however, as scientists work towards a cure and make progress in identifying the best treatment options for patients.

Prematurity Awareness Day

GEM SussanEvery year, more than half a million babies are born too soon in the United States. Our country's premature birth rate has risen by 36 percent over the last 25 years. That's serious cause for concern. Premature birth impacts infants, their families, and their community.  The Dare County Department of Public Health encourages residents to recognize National Prematurity Awareness Day on November 17, 2011. Prematurity is the leading cause of death for America's newborns.

March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness Month; Fight for Preemies
March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness;
Fight for Preemies

Those who are born prematurely may have lifelong health problems including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, chronic lung disease, blindness, and hearing loss. According a 2009 study published by the March of Dimes, first-year medical costs can be about 10 times greater for preterm infants ($49,000) than for full-term infants ($4,550).  Knowing about the risks and prevention measures can aid in families having full-term, healthy babies.

The Dare County Department of Public Health has programs in place to help women reduce the risk of premature births. Prenatal Care Services are available for pregnant women and offer regular checkups, access to recommended lab work, and referrals to high risk services when needed.  Obstetrical Case Management services provide medical case management for at risk pregnant women with Medicaid.

Rena Earnhardt of Botanical Interest seeds, center, presents Ace Hardware operations manager Kathy Seko, right and Marion Midgett, Master Gardener Alumni, left with a generous donation of packets of seeds for the free Seeds for Salvo efforts to regreen and rebloom the island in the wake of Hurricane Irene.    .
garden club members, area Master Gardeners and businesses have joined in the Seeds for Salvo effort to "regreen" the battered landscape from Rodanthe to Avon. As the area is cleared of debris, the loss of plant life has become obvious in thewake of Hurricane Irene.  Headed by Dare Master Gardener alumni Clair Sutton, Outer Banks volunteers are helping to revitalize the island by sharing seeds from their own gardens and using seeds donated by individuals and companies. The Ace Hardware stores have been the donation drop-off points for seeds collected from area gardens that are then dried, labeled and packaged in envelopes.

Online Marketing Terms in Plain English

by KIVI LEROUX MILLER on FEBRUARY 8, 2011

If you've been afraid to ask what something really is, or even more likely, been unable to explain in plain English what you mean when talking to board members or others new to online marketing, you'll find both of these resources helpful. Here are several definitions from the book that aren't related to email

.

Domain Registrar. A company that manages the registration of Internet domain names. Your domain registrar and web host may or may not be the same company.

HTML. Stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is made up of various codes that are surrounded by angle brackets < >.Web browsers (like Internet Explorer or Firefox) read HTML and then display it as web pages. The same code is used to create HTML emails (emails with colors, fonts, images, etc.).

Keywords. The specific terms (single words and phrases) used by someone searching for something on the Internet. By knowing the keywords that best describe your organization and its work, you can track mentions of those words on the Internet. You can also use those words on your own website, so that search engines will associate your website with those topics.

RSS. "Real Simple Syndication" is a way for websites that are updated frequently such as blogs or news sites to send new content automatically to subscribers. Readers of these types of sites subscribe and then receive updates to their RSS reader or email box, instead of having to check all the different sites all the time.

Web Hosting. The storing of the pages of your website on a computer server owned by the hosting company. The web host then makes the pages available to Internet users. Your web host and your domain registrar may or may not be the same company.

Hatteras Dinner Continued
dinner
We need volunteers - chefs and cooks, folks to work in the serving line, to help set-up the dining room, to help clean up, someone to organize the raffle, someone to deliver non-perishables to the food pantry the following morning. We also need people and businesses to sell tickets in advance. And, we need a flyer advertising the dinner, and volunteers to post the flyers on the island.

We are also looking for donations of: fish and seafood, desserts, raffle items, 20 large aluminum pans, 125 dinner plates, 125 dessert plates, 200 16 oz. cups for iced tea, 250 8 oz. cups for chowder, 200 cutlery sets with napkins, salt, and pepper.

Last year we raised almost $2500, and collected more than 10 fish boxes of non-perishables and personal care items.   This year the food pantry and the meals program need our support more than ever. If you would like to help with the dinner, please contact Susan West at ridgeroad@earthlink.net or 252-995-4131.

Thanksgiving Baskets
 Continued
Residents in the community can contribute one of two ways. You may send money to Roanoke Island Women's Club, c/o Karen Rodgers, 104 East Woodlands Drive, Manteo, NC 27954, to help purchase gift certificates from local grocery stores or you may prepare a Thanksgiving basket complete with all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. If you wish to do the basket, please contact Louise Riley at 473-3197 and she will explain the process and assign a family number. Don't delay, please let us know by November 7 of your intent to donate. With Hurricane Irene, many families will be looking for help and we want to be able to fill all their Thanksgiving dinner needs. If you have any additional questions, please contact Karen Rodgers at 252-473-9447. Your support truly makes a difference.

seeds

Ace operations manager Kathy Seko and Rena Earnhardt, seed representative for Botanical Interests, generously donated several thousand packets of seeds to Hatteras residents. Earnhardt said her great-grandfather founded the Hatteras Marlin Club, so she wanted to be involved in bringing the landscape back to it's natural beauty.

Islanders Mick Harris, Kim Robertson and AJ Bake, help unload the donation of daylilies, trees, and native wildflower seeds from the NC Department of Transportation, Roadside Environmental Division. Randy Raynor and Tommy Bobbitt, [middle and right] of DOT in Raleigh, drove the donations to the LifeBoat Food Pantry in Salvo for free dispersal. Part of the Seeds for Salvo volunteer program for the re-greening of Hatteras Island, the hundred pounds plus of wildflower seeds are packed in 2 lb bags with sowing instructions and available for all residents to seed their yards for 2012 summer blooms. All are free to islanders at The Lifeboat Food Pantry.

All packets and bags of wildflower seeds, rye seeds, the sumac trees and day-lilies are free to island residents and can be picked up at The Life Boat Food Pantry, Salvo on Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon until all are taken.   Daylilies and trees are in the yard and can be picked up anytime.

Home Depot of Kitty Hawk donated hundreds of winter vegetable plants and seeds for the Community Garden efforts in Buxton and in Avon. Rick Kinnard, along with volunteer employees from Home Depot and local Hatteras Island gardeners and Dare Volunteer Master Gardeners, have joined in preparing the ground and planting. Their harvest will go to the island Food Pantries this winter.  Persons wishing to donate from their own gardens to the Seeds for Salvo effort should contact crsutton@earthlink.net.
