Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets
Once again the Roanoke Island Women's Club is doing the Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for Dare County families. In cooperation with Dare County Social Services, the club is asking for donations or a complete basket to help those in need this Thanksgiving. Last year we were able to assist 154 Dare County families with either a complete dinner basket or a grocery certificate worth $25 or more depending on the family size. Many in the community have contributed faithfully for the past 21 years and please know that without this support the program would not exist. All 100% of the funds collected are used to purchase food and gift certificates. Continued Below . . .

|
Dr. Henry Marsh is one of England's foremost brain surgeons, a pioneer in his field and respected throughout the world. "When push comes to shove we can afford to lose an arm or a leg, but . . . if something goes wrong [in brain surgery] I can destroy that person's character - forever," he says. Marsh has been going to Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, for more than 17 years. For all the satisfaction Marsh gets from going to Kyiv, once there he must confront a lack of trained staff, equipment and basic supplies, as well as patients grossly misdiagnosed or too late in finding him. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
 | Look Deeper
|
Lung Cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined, accounting for more than 27% of cancer deaths. Federal funding for lung cancer lags behind other cancers, equating to $1,676 per death compared to $5,292 per death for colorectal cancer, $18,658 for breast cancer and $13,666 for prostate cancer. Lung cancer is not a death sentence. There are many people who survive the disease. Approximately 40,000 people who are alive today were diagnosed with lung cancer at some point in their lives. Research, awareness, and advocacy are the key to increasing the survival rate of lung cancer. Continued . . . . .

Gardeners join 'Seeds for Salvo'
 Local
 | Rena Earnhardt of Botanical Interest seeds, center, presents Ace Hardware operations manager Kathy Seko, right and Marion Midgett, Master Gardener Alumni, left with a generous donation of packets of seeds for the free Seeds for Salvo efforts to regreen and rebloom the island in the wake of Hurricane Irene. . |
garden club members, area Master Gardeners and businesses have joined in the Seeds for Salvo effort to "regreen" the battered landscape from Rodanthe to Avon. As the area is cleared of debris, the loss of plant life has become obvious in thewake of Hurricane Irene. Headed by Dare Master Gardener alumni Clair Sutton, Outer Banks volunteers are helping to revitalize the island by sharing seeds from their own gardens and using seeds donated by individuals and companies. The Ace Hardware stores have been the donation drop-off points for seeds collected from area gardens that are then dried, labeled and packaged in envelopes.

Documentary Film Series Continued
The film shows Marsh's troubled and compassionate humanity through, and moves him to continue an often painful struggle to do good things in this selfish and flawed world. This is ultimately not a medical film, nor is it a portrait of a saint. Rather, it is about a man who openly wrestles with moral and ethical issues that touch every one of us." Learn more about this film at the POV website The OBX Peace and Justice Coalition Films Series features award winning peace and social justice documentaries. We purchase films with public rights that cost from $30.00 to $200. We may only ask for donations. This cost is offset by contributions from Holy Redeemer by the Sea, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks, and individual donors like you. Other groups may be interested in our extensive film library on a variety of community outreach and social justice issues. We lend them free, a donation is appreciated. You may not require payment when you show any of our films. Visit our websiteto learn more about the upcoming film as well as what else we have to offer.
