Volunteer aboard the Elizabeth II
Furling The Sails on Elizabeth II- Shown is volunteer crew member Brent Rhuelman and Roanoke Island Festival Park employee and also volunteer crew member, Anna Davis, practicing furling the sail during the recent weekend training voyage. Various volunteer opportunities are available at RIFP. Call (252) 475-1500 for more information.

The Elizabeth II and her volunteer crew of 12 and Roanoke Island Festival Parks staff of 3 sailed from its homeport in Manteo for training in the Albemarle Sound on the morning of October 22. During the three day voyage, the ship sailed from Mann's Harbor, to the North River, to the Pasquotank River, and to the Alligator River before returning to Roanoke Island. The voyage was a training experience for the volunteer crew and taught how to splice, seize, and whip lines and how to properly tack and wear ship that included the proper commands to follow and the proper lines on which to haul. Crew also learned procedures for fire, man overboard, and abandoning ship.

The Elizabeth II was christened and launched in 1983 and is North Carolina's only moving historic site.  Shipbuilders used the designs of vessels from 1585 to build the Elizabeth II. It was constructed on the Manteo waterfront by a team of builders, lead by Mr. O. Lie-Nielson

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Look Deeper Public Service Announcement
Look Deeper
Lung Cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined, accounting for more than 27% of cancer deaths.  Federal funding for lung cancer lags behind other cancers, equating to $1,676 per death compared to $5,292 per death for colorectal cancer, $18,658 for breast cancer and $13,666 for prostate cancer.   Lung cancer is not a death sentence.  There are many people who survive the disease.  Approximately 40,000 people who are alive today were diagnosed with lung cancer at some point in their lives.  Research, awareness, and advocacy are the key to increasing the survival rate of lung cancer.

Really, Really Free Market on Hatteras Island
Really, Really Free Market on Hatteras Island
Really, Really Free Market on Hatteras Island
Really Really Free Market (RRFM) organizers on Hatteras Island want to thank the countless supporters, volunteers and generous donors both on the island and from all across the country.  The outpouring of love and aid has been tremendous since the market set up that first weekend after the storm hit. It is also truly amazing to see residents from every village on the island pull together and donate hours and hours of time away from their families to help those in need.

At this time, while NO donations will be turned away, to ensure that all of the collected donations find homes, organizers ask that only requested items be donated. Also, monetary donations will continue to be collected for the Island Food Pantries to best serve the residents of Hatteras Island throughout the winter. Checks can be made to either Hatteras Island Food Pantry and sent to the United Methodist Men at PO Box 1591 Buxton, NC 27920 or the Lifeboat Community Church and mailed to PO Box 84 Salvo NC 27972. Your donation is tax deductible. The Hatteras Island Angel Tree program is still in need of new, unwrapped toys and new clothing and shoes for children ages 2-17. These items can be dropped off at either RRFM location. Finally, Free Market warm clothing will also be available at the Hatteras Island Community Fair on November 19th at Cape Hatteras Secondary School.

Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets
http://img.ehowcdn.com/article-page-main/ehow/images/a04/9k/rt/feed-homeless-thanksgiving-800x800.jpgOnce again the Roanoke Island Women's Club is doing the Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for Dare County families. In cooperation with Dare County Social Services, the club is asking for donations or a complete basket to help those in need this Thanksgiving. Last year we were able to assist 154 Dare County families with either a complete dinner basket or a grocery certificate worth $25 or more depending on the family size. Many in the community have contributed faithfully for the past 21 years and please know that without this support the program would not exist. All 100% of the funds collected are used to purchase food and gift certificates.  Continued Below . .  .

Thanksgiving Baskets
 Continued
Residents in the community can contribute one of two ways. You may send money to Roanoke Island Women's Club, c/o Karen Rodgers, 104 East Woodlands Drive, Manteo, NC 27954, to help purchase gift certificates from local grocery stores or you may prepare a Thanksgiving basket complete with all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. If you wish to do the basket, please contact Louise Riley at 473-3197 and she will explain the process and assign a family number. Don't delay, please let us know by November 7 of your intent to donate. With Hurricane Irene, many families will be looking for help and we want to be able to fill all their Thanksgiving dinner needs. If you have any additional questions, please contact Karen Rodgers at 252-473-9447. Your support truly makes a difference.
