Outer Banks Hospital's Development Council
Launches Get Pinked! Campaign
The board of directors of The Outer Banks Hospital were riding in style in Tucker Freeman's 1949 Mercury as they launched the Development Council's Get Pinked! campaign. The campaign raises funds to underwrite the costs of screening mammograms for men and women living in Dare County in financial need.
"Early detection can save lives," said Carl Curnutte, co-chairman of the campaign with Linda Willey. "The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chances that treatment will work." Last year, the Get Pinked! campaign raised more than $35,000. This year organizations are holding bake sales and yard sales, sponsoring blue jeans Fridays, selling pink hair extensions, pink piggy banks and sunglasses,
The campaign has pledged that 100% of the proceeds raised by the pink partners will underwrite the costs of screening mammograms. Monies from the raffle and the Get Pinked! party at Kelly's Restaurant & Tavern on November 4th will offset any expenses.

Recovery Education Workshops
The Tourist Season is over. Winter is coming on. Most of all, so many people were affected by Hurricane Irene. These are rough times for some persons with Mental Health, Substance Use and other Life Challenges.
Recovery Innovations Outreach Wellness City is offering Recovery Education Workshops in Currituck, Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties to help persons with their life challenges. Check here for class schedules.
WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) - WRAP is an evidence-based practice that teaches people to use a strengths-based self-help tool that enables them to regain control of their lives. Participants identify warning signs and events that may lead to increased challenges with symptoms and the wellness tools that can overcome such challenges. The WRAP Workshop is 8 sessions (weeks)/2 hours each. WRAP is a plan that builds on itself. It helps to start this Workshop within the first 3 weeks from its beginning.
WRAP has been recognized by SAMHSA which was established in 1992 and directed by Congress to target effectively substance abuse and mental health services to the people most in need and to translate research in these areas more effectively and more rapidly into the general health care system. Over the years SAMHSA has demonstrated that - prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover from mental and substance use disorders. Behavioral health services improve health status and reduce health care and other costs to society. Continued improvement in the delivery and financing of prevention, treatment and recovery support services provides a cost effective opportunity to advance and protect the Nation's health. To accomplish its work SAMHSA administers a combination of competitive, formula, and block grant programs and data collection activities. The Agency's programs are carried out through its centers and offices. SAMHSA has a national registry of evidence based programs and practices.
 | More about WRAP |
Do you have a client, friend or family member dealing with Mental Health, Substance Use or other Life Challenges? Encourage the person(s) to attend the Workshops. Recovery Education Programs will show that "Recovery is Possible for Everyone".

Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets
Once again the Roanoke Island Women's Club is doing the Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for Dare County families. In cooperation with Dare County Social Services, the club is asking for donations or a complete basket to help those in need this Thanksgiving. Last year we were able to assist 154 Dare County families with either a complete dinner basket or a grocery certificate worth $25 or more depending on the family size. Many in the community have contributed faithfully for the past 21 years and please know that without this support the program would not exist. All 100% of the funds collected are used to purchase food and gift certificates. Residents in the community can contribute one of two ways. You may send money to Roanoke Island Women's Club, c/o Karen Rodgers, 104 East Woodlands Drive, Manteo, NC 27954, to help purchase gift certificates from local grocery stores or you may prepare a Thanksgiving basket complete with all the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. If you wish to do the basket, please contact Louise Riley at 473-3197 and she will explain the process and assign a family number. Don't delay, please let us know by November 7 of your intent to donate. With Hurricane Irene, many families will be looking for help and we want to be able to fill all their Thanksgiving dinner needs. If you have any additional questions, please contact Karen Rodgers at 252-473-9447. Your support truly makes a difference.
