Currituck-Dare Women's Fund to hold Afternoon Tea
For many years, men were the primary holder of wealth in our country. The federal tax code as well as religious ethics supported many early generous philanthropic gifts. Women have had a long history of community service and giving of time and talents that supported activities to benefit the needy and children in our communities. Today, women now are in greater control of financial wealth than ever before in our history. Women's Funds created by groups of women are a more recent and growing area of philanthropy across the country. he Currituck-Dare Women's Fund was organized by the Currituck-Dare Community Foundation Affiliate of NCCF in 2009. The Fund is holding an afternoon tea on October 27, 4:00-5:30, to share with women of the community learn more the fund in Currituck and Dare County. It will be held at the home of Peggy Birkemeier. Please RSVP at 491-8166 or email to pbirk@nccommunityfoundation.org.

Note to Recruiters of Volunteers. There are currently 18 listings published in CommonGood. To accommodate the size of the list, the font is reduced and wording is very limited. To benefit your organization as well as the volunteers, I will be posting Volunteer Opportunities online at obxcommongood.org. The list will continue but the posting can include more information, graphics and a description of your organization. So when you need volunteers, please send me a summary version for the newsletter and an expanded version for the posting online. Or I can copy/link to your website if that is easier for you.
thanks ,

Dare County alone has more than a quarter of a million acres of property in conservation as compared to just 16,000 acres available for development. Dare, Currituck, Tyrell and Hyde counties boast a diverse and fascinating array of wildlife to view and waterways to paddle. In addition to a wealth of marine life, Eastern North Carolina is home to black bears, alligators, red wolves, deer and hundreds of species of birds. The waterways invite kayakers and canoeists to glide through the back waters, the sounds and even the ocean. And natural history attractions draw both young and old who want to know more about the place where the first English settlements were born. Year round, there are nature programs offered by state and federal agencies, as well as nonprofits. Annually in November, all the stops are pulled out for folks who come from across the country to participate in the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival. The six day event celebrates the natural wonders of the area and offers many opportunities to explore.

Meet Lily - The Hunger Awareness Muppet
Sesame Street might seem like an unlikely neighborhood to discover social justice in action. But taking a look at the show's history, it's clear that this long-running children's program cares about the ways in which children relate to their world - including issues of injustice and suffering. Whether it's approaching economic insecurity or dealing with parents in the military, Sesame Street adapts to suit the culture and concerns of its audience.
 | Sesame Street: Growing Hope Against Hunger Highlight Reel |
This Sunday (Oct. 9), Sesame Street will introduce a brand-new Muppet character - a magenta-faced, impoverished 7-year-old named Lily who represents one of the 17-million Americans who struggle daily with hunger and poverty - during a rare prime-time special called, "Growing Hope Against Hunger." The TV special aims to broaden children's understanding about issues of disparity in the United States, particularly as they relate to hunger. Lily will travel to a community garden and encounter the wide world of Muppets and guests, including husband-and-wife, country music artist Brad Paisley and actress Kimberly Williams Paisley, in as she explores American agriculture. "Food insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children," the Paisleys said in a statement.
