October is Children's Health Month
October is National Children's Health Month and this year's theme is safety. The Dare County Department of Public Health is urging parents, grandparents, and caregivers to take precautions to protect children's health. "Children are our most precious resource. Children's Health Month provides a wonderful opportunity for Public Health to spread the message to parents and caregivers about the importance of providing a safe environment for young children," said Health Director, Anne Thomas.
Here are some simple, low-cost product safety tips to protect children in your home:
1. Never leave standing liquids unattended. Stay within arm's reach while your child is bathing or near any container of water. If the phone rings, let it ring; stay with your child.
2. Prevent tap water scalds by adjusting the temperature on your hot water heater to 120 F.
3. Keep medicines and hazardous household chemicals locked up and out of sight. Use child-resistant packaging for medicines and hazardous household chemicals, and call 1-800-222-1222 if a poisoning occurs.
4. Cut the loops on window-blind cords and call 1-800-506-4636 for a free repair kit.
5. Make sure your hairdryer has a large rectangular plug. This immersion protection device prevents electrocution if the hairdryer is dropped in water.
6. Change the battery in your smoke alarm when you change your clock's setting in October.
7. Have a professional check your furnace for carbon monoxide leaks and your chimney for blockages; put a CO alarm in the hallway near every separate sleeping area.
8. Prevent electrocutions by installing a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in your household outlets.
9. Installing Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) can prevent electrical fires. AFCIs can sense electrical arc and trip the circuit.
10. Babies on adult beds risk suffocation from hidden hazards such as entrapment between the bed and wall, entrapment involving the bed frame, headboard and footboard, or soft bedding such as pillows, thick quilts and comforters.

Birth Without Fear: "Let Your Monkey Do It!"
Women have been birthing for all of human history, yet birth today often seems surrounded by mystery, anxiety, and fear. Midwife/author Ina May Gaskin tells women to "let your monkey do it!" when giving birth. Cathi Barrett, CPM, will discuss the normalcy of birth to help allay these negative emotions. We will talk about releasing fear, letting go, and "letting your monkey do it" rather than over thinking birth. Tips for how to do this in labor included!
If you are a new parent, pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or are passionate about birth and babies, this FREE educational event is for you! Partners, family, friends, and babes in arms are welcome. Thursday October 13, 7:00 pm. Kill Devil Hills Library Meeting Room.

Manteo Cub Scout Pack 501 Distributes Bags for Food Drive
Tidewater Council's Cub Scout Pack 501 began distributing grocery bags to students at Manteo Elementary School today to kick-off their first community project of the year - a food drive that will benefit Roanoke Island Food Pantry at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. The scouts will distribute bags donated by Food-A-Rama and Piggly Wiggly this week. And, next week, will collect food donations from students as they arrive at school on Monday, October 10th and Tuesday, October 11th.
Cub Scout Grayson Warner, 9, says he hopes to collect at least 100 bags next week. His friend, Cub Scout Trey Pearce, 7, is more ambitious - he hopes to get back "all of the bags - full of food" - more than 700. They may be in luck. Pack Leader Tony Pearce said local residents are very generous and supportive of scout events.
The drive asks for non-perishable items such as "Hearty" Soups; Peanut Butter; Jelly; Canned Meats & Fish; Pasta; Breakfast Cereal; Corn Bread Mix; Instant Potatoes; Applesauce; Saltine Crackers; Canned Tomatoes; and White, Red & Black Beans.

Food Bank of the Albemarle Annual Walk for Hunger. On October 9, 2011, rain or shine, the Food Bank of the Albemarle will hold its annual Walk for Hunger. Registration and sign-in will begin at 12:30 PM, and walkers will leave at 2:00 PM from Charles Creek Park in Elizabeth City and cover about 4.1 miles. The walk is the major fundraiser for the Food Bank, and we rely on the traditionally superb support and enthusiasm from our local communities, churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals to help provide the funds we need to serve the hungry in northeast North Carolina. Once again, there will be games for the children, camaraderie, and a great snack. Please consider taking part as a walker, a team organizer, or a sponsor. Your efforts will go a long way and make a great impact. For each dollar that is raised by our walkers and their sponsors, we are able to provide about five pounds of food. That is the equivalent of over four meals. Please circle October 9, 2011 on your calendar and dust off the walking shoes. You may download walk materials at www.afoodbank.org. For more information call Cee Cee at 252-335-4035 extension 100 or George at extension 113.
