book volunteerThe non-profit Dare Literacy Council is preparing for our next Book Sale Fundraiser to be held Saturday, October 8 at The Marketplace Shopping Center in Southern Shores. But, before the sale, we need a lot of help to prepare for this very important fundraiser. Proceeds from the book sale are our main source of income which allows us to keep our programs going. The DLC offers free tutoring for adults who wish to learn to read, improve reading or math skills, learn English or study for their GED.

If you can spare at least an hour of your time to help, we'd love to hear from you.  If you are interested in volunteering, call the DLC at (252) 216-7773 or email us at dareliteracy@gmail.com. Thank you for helping the DLC with this very important event!

Walk for Hunger

walk for hungerOn October 9, 2011, rain or shine, the Food Bank of the Albemarle will hold its annual Walk for Hunger.  Registration and sign-in will begin at 12:30 PM, and walkers will leave at 2:00 PM from Charles Creek Park in Elizabeth City and cover about 4.1 miles.  The walk is the major fundraiser for the Food Bank, and we rely on the traditionally superb support and enthusiasm from our local communities, churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals to help provide the funds we need to serve the hungry in northeast North Carolina.  Once again, there will be games for the children, camaraderie, and a great snack.  Please consider taking part as a walker, a team organizer, or a sponsor.  Your efforts will go a long way and make a great impact.  For each dollar that is raised by our walkers and their sponsors, we are able to provide about five pounds of food.  That is the equivalent of over four meals.  Please circle October 9, 2011 on your calendar and dust off the walking shoes.  You may download walk materials at www.afoodbank.orgFor more information call Cee Cee at 252-335-4035 extension 100 or George at extension 113.

OB Hospital Get Pinked Campaign

http://www.theouterbankshospital.com/uploadedImages/TheOuterBanksHospital/Get%20Pinked%21%20Banner.jpg

Last year the  breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign raised over $35,000 by partnering with 27 organizations and countless individuals in a community effort to make a difference. "Once again we will be encouraging businesses and individuals to commit to raising a $1,000 donation in away that suits their individuality - either through employee campaigns, such as a "blue jeans" Friday, sales of unique and pink items or from customer donations," said Linda Willey, Co-Chairman. "The Get Pinked! Campaign pledges once again that every $1,000 raised by our Get Pinked! Partners will go toward the detection and treatment of breast cancer right here in Dare County." For more information about the GET PINKED! Campaign and how to become a GET PINKED! Partner, call The Outer Banks Hospital's Development Office at 449-9183. The campaign will run August through October.
