Two OBX men offer wounded warriors and families free vacation
Danny, a Purple Heart recipient, almost lost his life in Afghanistan, but received a vacation with his family he deserves - thanks to two men from the Outer Banks. Danny's injuries have taken a huge toll on the family's financial situation as well as their overall morale. Kevin Mccabe and John Magee have been working on offering wounded warriors and their families a free vacation in the Outer Banks. Both are sons of Marines, Hatteras locals, and have a special place in their heart for the service men and women."They go over there and fight for our freedoms, they are the ones, they get all the credit thankfully they can come up here and have a good time, that's the least I could do" says McCabe. The home the Rucks stayed in all week was free, the meals at all the restaurants were free, and even activities like fishing, sightseeing and sailing were free. The Rucks were the first family hosted by the project, but at least two more families are scheduled to arrive this summer from Camp Lejeune. The plan is to extend the project to be available to all wounded veterans and their families. John and Kevin say it was an honor to host a man and his family who have sacrificed so much for them. You can make donations by check or money order to Military Order of the Purple Heart. Please write on the memo line: for WW-Hatteras Vacation Fund. Send checks to: WW-Hatteras, P.O. Box 431, Frisco, N.C. 27936. Make gift certificates to Purple Heart Recipient. For more information, call John McGee at 252-995-2924 or Kevin McCabe at 252-995-4788. Don't Cut More at Four
North Carolina's constitution guarantees all children a sound basic education. Slashing funding from the state's highly lauded pre-kindergarten More at Four program by 20 percent and limiting slots that would bar more than 80 percent of the state's at-risk students from participating would be destructive and wrong. Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard E. Manning ruled July 20th that the state cannot deny any at-risk students access to the state's critically acclaimed pre-kindergarten services. Provisions included in the budget that diminished prekindergarten services, Judge Manning ruled, violate the state's constitution.
 | Judge Howard Manning Jr. holds hearing on state budget cuts |
Judge Manning wrote: "Each at-risk four-year old that appears at the doors of the [NC Pre-Kindergarten Program] this fall is a defenseless, fragile child whose background of poverty or disability places the child at-risk of subsequent academic failure. The fact that these small children are at risk is not their fault and they may not be denied their constitutional right to the opportunity to obtain a sound basic education by adults."
