Two OBX men offer wounded warriors and families free vacation
Danny, a Purple Heart recipient, almost lost his life in Afghanistan, but received a vacation with his family he deserves - thanks to two men from the Outer Banks. Danny's injuries have taken a huge toll on the family's financial situation as well as their overall morale. Kevin Mccabe and John Magee have been working on offering wounded warriors and their families a free vacation in the Outer Banks. Both are sons of Marines, Hatteras locals, and have a special place in their heart for the service men and women."They go over there and fight for our freedoms, they are the ones, they get all the credit thankfully they can come up here and have a good time, that's the least I could do" says McCabe. The home the Rucks stayed in all week was free, the meals at all the restaurants were free, and even activities like fishing, sightseeing and sailing were free. The Rucks were the first family hosted by the project, but at least two more families are scheduled to arrive this summer from Camp Lejeune. The plan is to extend the project to be available to all wounded veterans and their families. John and Kevin say it was an honor to host a man and his family who have sacrificed so much for them. You can make donations by check or money order to Military Order of the Purple Heart. Please write on the memo line: for WW-Hatteras Vacation Fund. Send checks to: WW-Hatteras, P.O. Box 431, Frisco, N.C. 27936. Make gift certificates to Purple Heart Recipient. For more information, call John McGee at 252-995-2924 or Kevin McCabe at 252-995-4788. 33rd Annual Wright Kite Festival
at Wright Brothers National Memorial - July 16-17
Can Cows Fly? Let's Go Fly a Kite: The 33rd Annual Wright Kite Festival will be hosted by Kitty Hawk Kites at Wright Brothers National Memorial on July 16 - 17, 2011. For thousands of years kites have been a simple and fun method of flight. As teenagers Wilbur and Orville Wright enjoyed building and flying the diamond shape kites with the long tails. In the strong, steady winds of Kitty Hawk the Wright brothers tested their gliders (1900, 1901, and 1902) by first flying them as kites. The success of their first controlled powered flight on the morning of December 17, 1903 can be traced back to the brother's 1899 kite in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio.
 | Video from 30th Annual Wright Kite Festival |
Come test the winds of Kitty Hawk; the program starts each day from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the memorial. Free stunt kite and power kite lessons, kite building and kite flying for children, giant single line kites, parachute races and more. Park entrance fees apply. For more information, check out www.wrbr.gov or Kitty Hawk Kites website at http://www.kittyhawk.com/community/wrightkite.cfm or call the Wright Brothers National Memorial at (252) 441-7430.

Help Make Wishes Come True in Eastern North Carolina.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina has one purpose- t o grant wishes to children between the ages from of 2 1/2 and 18 with life-threatening medical conditions. The benefits of wish fulfillment are many and varied. Though it is difficult to measure the effect a wish has on a child, we believe that while doctors provide the medicine, the Make-A-Wish Foundation provides the magic! Since 1986, the chapter has granted more than 2,000 (and counting) favorite wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions throughout eastern North Carolina. The magic of wish granting usually begins with a referral call to the chapter office by a physician or social worker. However, the family or even the child himself may do the referral. A wish referral form is completed with relevant information about the child. After the Make-A-Wish Foundation has been contacted, a medical authorization form is sent to the child's primary physician. Upon medical approval, a team of volunteers will schedule an initial wish visit to discover the child's wish. Then chapter staff and volunteers work the magic for the child's wish to come true. There are four steps to granting a wish. Each step builds on the next to help create the amazing experiences that delight wish kids and their families. A wish experience is frequently a source of inspiration for children undergoing difficult medical treatments and a positive force that helps them overcome their obstacles. Janice Lane, a volunteer says, It's such a great experience to see these kids focused on something other than their illness. The first step for volunteers is to fill out the paperwork and send it in with a $20 fee to cover the cost of a background investigation. There is training provided and each volunteer will go out for the first time with an experienced volunteer. If you would like additional information about how to share in the power of a wish by volunteering or making a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina, call 1-800-432-WISH. or
