Looking for a few more wonderful people to offer a room to an artist on Tuesday June 21st and Weds June 22nd. They usually leave on Thursday.

In the past, many great friendships have been forged and walls adorned with grateful artisan gifts! Please call Julia if you could extend some accommodation this year.

Virgnia Dare Business and Professional Women Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner

Virginia Dare Business & Professional Women Invite Members and Guests to their Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner

& Installation of New Officers at Cafe Lachine (formerly Mallard's Marsh) on the road to Wanchese (pass the market)

on Tuesday, June 14 at 6 PM.

While mobilizing for World War I, the U.S. Government recognized the need for a cohesive group to coordinate identification of women's available skills and experience. A Women's War Council, financed through a federal grant, was established by the War Department to organize the resources of professional women. The National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs was founded on July 15, 1919. The organization later filed to "do Learnmorebusiness as" (dba) Business and Professional Women/USA (BPW/USA). Throughout the years, three major issues shaped BPW/USA's legislative agenda: elimination of sex discrimination in employment, the principle of equal pay, and the need for a comprehensive equal rights amendment.

Virginia Dare Business and Professional Womens Club is the local chapter of BPW/USA and BPW/NC.  These national and state organizations lobby for issues important to women, such as: pay equity, equal rights for women under the law of the land (we dont have that guarantee yet), small business interests, quality health care, Social Security and other workplace equity and work-life issues.   These organizations also partner with others to bring members access to financial advice, special programs and so forth.

BPW is an advocate for women and reaches out to help women help themselves through education, self-improvement and the help of other women.  Networking is an important part of our work.  Our Womens Symposium, held each fall, reaches out to women in the community with keynote speakers that focus on womens issues.  This symposium also enables us to raise money for scholarships to women (25 years or older) who are reentering the workforce or choose a different career and need financial assistance for post secondary education or training.

Please come to meet and congratulate the 5 scholarship recipients who are continuing their education in order to enhance their careers: Catherine McCabe-Masters in Gerentology, Kelly Lawson - Masters in Criminal Justice, Kristen Thompson- Masters in Special Education, Suzanne Ashley - BS in Human Resource Management, Cindy Bovee- Ministry Studies at Seminary A delightful evening you won't want to miss. 1 CalendarOrder individually off the lunch menu- go to www.cafelachine.com to preview in advance.

Fear has no place in Schools
http://change-production.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/3/ne/qh/tanEQHRSrdLLPJm-300x110-cropped.jpg?1307393589 n the 1982 Supreme Court decision Plyer vs Doe, it was declared illegal to deny a child access to a public school education based on immigration status. It's a decision that makes sense, after all, children have little choice to immigrate and creating entire generations of uneducated residents generates no positive benefit to anyone. So why are some North Carolina lawmakers pushing a bill that would force K-12 school principals in that state to ask parents about the immigration status of their children?

The bill itself provides no reasoning. It simply states that the information would be gathered for "analysis,"  even though the information can't be used to bar children from school. In other words, the demand to ask the immigration status of children outlined in the bill would serve no useful p1. actnowurpose aside from turning educators into pseudo-ICE agents and creating an environment of intimidation in the North Carolina school system.

Targeting children is an especially cruel turn of events. On Tuesday June 6th, the North Carolina House Education Committee will begin a hearing on the surreptitiously named HB 744 "Safe Schools Act" at 10 a.m. If you agree that fostering an environment of fear in schools is unacceptable,
