Ribbon Cutting for Accessible Trail, Nags Head Woods
Nags Head Woods (map) The Nature Conservancy will unveil a trail for people with disabilities at its Nags Head Woods Preserve on June 8. The public is invited to the ribbon cutting at 1 p.m., followed by a hike on the one-mile trail and refreshments. Nags Head Woods Steward Aaron McCall says the trail will give everyone the opportunity to experience the maritime forest. "The trail will go around an interdunal freshwater pond and through a maritime swamp forest with an overlook of a brackish marsh system," he explains. "With this trail we hope to give visitors an idea of the many different types of natural communities that can be found in the preserve." In addition to people with disabilities, McCall says it will also be a good place for families with small children in strollers.
Construction of the trail was made possible by a $100,000 grant from Dominion Energy, an $84,318 grant from the Dare County Tourism Board, $7,350 from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and $1,000 from the Kiwanis Club of the Outer Banks and North Banks Rotary Club.Kill Devil Hills NC 27948

Dare County Community Garden
 | About Wake Forest and Community Gardens |
Wake Forest University and Tommy's Gourmet Market has provided support in helping Kaitlyn Hudgins develop a community garden in Dare County and Food for Thought has jumped on board as a partner. Gardeners, carpenters, Master Gardeners, families or individuals interested in supporting or participating in the "Dare ToGrow" project are encouraged to contact Kaitlyn Hudgin. Gardeners are needed to help draw up and outline the layout of the garden, including where the planter boxes should be, what should be planted, planting the seeds and tending the garden. Organizations that would like to get involved in a socially responsible project could either donate moneyor supplies for the initial construction of the garden. Supplies such a soil, lumber and fencing are desperately needed.
"Dare to Grow" is committed to providing healthy food choices so our children can grow up to be physically and spiritually healthy people. As Director of Development, Kaitlyn hopes to develop children's programs for the purpose of educating them on healthy food choices with the hope that the lower income families in our community can benefit from the crops harvested. Contact Kaitlyn at hudgkm8@wfu.edu or (252) 489-1743.
