Announcing: the Common Good Outreach and Social Justice Events Calendar

It has always seemed to me that a logical extension of CommonGood Enews would a CommonGood Event Calendar. The Outer Banks Community Services Collaborative is researching comprehensive integrated community communication systems. But such work takes a lot of time. CommonGood will the gap by providing a simple, easy to use community event calendar. When a more integrated community communication system is implemented, I will gladly pass on my experience and information.
This is the first CommonGood Enews that is integrated with the CommonGood Event Calendar. If you see a calendar icon in any article, you can click on it to go to the event on the Calendar. From there you can send yourself a reminder, print the page, email the event or download the event into your desktop calendar. An unlimited number of users can submit events for approval. You can find the submit form at www.obxcommongood.org or on the Calendar itself In the next few months, CommonGood will roll out the ability to add, edit and delete your own events to 50 users. We have limited capability in categorizing events, but we hope to improve that soon.
For this first edition, I entered the events on the Calendar. In the future, I strongly encourage you to add your own events. It makes my job much easier. Also Please do not assume that if you add an event to calendar, it will magically create a Enews Article. Guidelines can be found at www.obxcommongood.org . Please email me with questions or comments: nancy@obxcommongood.org. Thanks! Nancy

"Not on MY Watch!" Child Abuse Prevention Seminars Kids First, Inc. Presents: "Not on MY Watch!" Child Abuse Prevention Seminars with Dr. Jennifer Brown. Tuesday, May 10th @ 5:30pm (preregister by Friday, May 6th) Tuesday, May 24th @ 5:30 pm (preregister by Friday, May 20th) Both seminars will be held at the Currituck County Cooperative Extension Office, 120 Community Way, Barco NC. Call Kids First at 338-5658 to preregister TODAY. FREE BBQ DINNER with preregistration. Learn how to protect children from sexual predators, how to talk to your children about sexual abuse, how to identify the warnings signs that a child is being abused, tips for talking to your childcare providers about Shaken Baby Syndrome, and much more. "Socially Skilled Child Molesters" are just that- skilled at deception. They spend their entire lives working to fool you! Even the most diligent of parents might miss the warning signs- but this presentation will help to better arm you against these predators. It is estimated that one in four girls and one in six boys is sexually abused in some manner before their eighteenth birthday. No one can possibly be with their child every minute of every day of their lives, and child molesters are highly skilled at gaining access to children. Less than one in ten children report their abuse. In this presentation, Dr. Brown will discuss with you ways to talk to your children about sexual abuse to increase the likelihood that your child would come to you to tell you about something that had happened to him/her. Please plan to attend one of these seminars- or call us to arrange for a presentation to your group or organization! |

Add Your Voice to the Candlelight Rally to End Alzheimer's Disease
Millions of families across America are affected by Alzheimer's disease. One in eight Americans over age 65 is living with Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death without a way to prevent, cure, or even slow its progression. With new leaders in Congress, it is vital that the voices of those fighting this disease and working toward a cure are heard. We must let Congress know that in order to fight Alzheimer's, we need our elected officials to make a commitment to address the Alzheimer's epidemic. On the evening of May 15, 2011 Alzheimer's advocates will gather on the lawn in front of the Capitol to share their stories and light candles in honor of loved ones. Add your support by joining the virtual Candlelight Rally. Share how you have been affected by Alzheimer's and why we must stand together to end this disease.

Alternative School Receives North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for Helping Food for Thought Feed Area Children
 | Hannah Simon, a student, Daniel Johnson, a student, Paul Price, a student, and Kevin Cox, a teacher, all from the Alternative School. |
"We are so proud of our special next-door neighbors who are an integral part of our volunteer team and come to give of themselves," said Loismary Hoehne, president of Food for Thought. "These 7th through 12th graders face many challenges and we believe this partnership is beneficial to all involved. Here they get to be hands on and they enjoy being involved with something that benefits kids in need." The non-profit provides weekend meal bags during the school year to area children who meet federal guidelines for free breakfasts and reduced lunches and whose parents choose to participate in the program. "For years, the Alternative School's student council has tackled a service project such as Head Start and various others," said Kevin Cox, a teacher at the Alternative School "Civic engagement is one of the school's goals for students. In 2008, they reached out to their next door neighbor, Food for Thought." The result? The kids are very excited about participating and bring a unique perspective. They look forward to volunteering each week. Each week they work to get their class work done so they are free to take part. About six or seven students go each week. The school rotates the students weekly during the school year. They work with members of the community in a production line to prepare more than 640 bags of food for pre-school, elementary and secondary children who do not get enough to eat on the weekends. The interaction with the adult volunteers is a great experience for them. "Not only do they experience being a part of a solution to a community problem, they also have formed (otherwise unlikely) relationships with the adults, many of whom are retirees, in the process," said Cox. Food for Thought, a non-profit organization, provides healthy non-perishable breakfasts and lunches for more than 640 preschool, elementary and secondary children who meet specific criteria in Dare County on weekends during the school year. The non-profit was one of five in Dare County that received the prestigious North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 2009. For more information or you are interested in participating, go to www.foodforthoughtobx.org or contact Loismary Hoehne, 252-480-0036. Send checks to: Food for Thought, Inc, P.O. Box 1167, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949
