March for Babies
May 7: Roanoke Island Festival Park, Manteo. Registration begins at 9am and the walk begins at 10am. You may participate by forming a family or company team & walking with us or by simply donating to this worthy cause. All funds raised support the research, education, community programs and advocacy for the prevention of birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes is the only organization totally dedicated to the health and welfare of mothers and babies in the world with a proven track record of success. Look Good, Feel Better
OB Hospital's Cancer Resource Center, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will offer Look Good...Feel Better� on May 9, a free program aimed at helping female cancer patients in the community. Guided by volunteer cosmetologists, patients who participate in the class will learn how to use make-up and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Cancer Resource Center, located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building adjacent to the hospital. The classes are offered free-of-charge. To pre-register, or for additional information, please contact the Cancer Resource Center by calling 252-449-7350.

Dare to Care Book Fair
Put your shopping shoes on and get ready to support a great local organization! The Dare Literacy Council and Duck's Cottage Bookstore are pleased to announce they will be holding the first ever Dare to Care Book Fair on Wednesday, May 11; from 3pm to 7pm. Duck's Cottage will donate 15% of all sales during that time to the Dare Literacy Council! Pre-paid special orders, online and telephone orders taken during the Book Fair will be included. Duck's Cottage is an Indiebound bookstore with a wonderful selection of hand-picked hardbacks, paperbacks, kid's books, regional titles and more. Our freshly roasted coffee, puzzles, cards, and signature gift items like the popular red 'Peace. Love. Books. Coffee.' mug are included in the Fair as well. The Dare Literacy Council provides free tutoring services for adults wishing to learn to read, improve reading and math skills, learn English or get their GED. Literacy Council volunteers will be on hand with information about their organization. Duck's Cottage is located on the pond at the Waterfront Shops in Duck. For more information call 252-261-5510. Volunteers for Needed for Health Clinic.
The fair will take place for four days in mid-June & Volunteers are needed in the following areas: mailing letters to physicians, calling to confirm addresses are correct, calling to confirm physician commitment, Facilities Set-Up, Publicity and and Promotion, Transportation, Scheduling, Reception, Food, Childcare, Clean-up and Prayer. The Dare Literacy Council: Volunteers to help with fundraising, administrative tasks, publicity, and tutor/student support; to help with assessing students and developing tutor seminars. If you are fluent in Spanish, help is needed communicating with students. Time: As little as one hour is a tremendous boost to helping the DLC continue to serve the community. Girls Night In - Stop Bullying Before It Starts!
All 5th grade girls are invited to attend the Girl Scout Girlz Night In sleep over from Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, May 7 at 9 a.m. The program, which takes place at Dare County Parks and Recreation on Mustain Street in Kill Devil Hills, aims to empower girls to stop bullying before it starts. Girls will participate in activities that teach anti-bullying techniques while building confidence and a positive self-image. Cost for the program is $10 which includes snacks and dinner. Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women's Club May 10 Meeting

Soaring 100 is the centennial of Orville Wright's 1911 glider flight-non-powered. This event lead to the field and sport in aviation known as soaring and set a world record that stood for nearly 10 years-the last glider built by the Wrights and the last flight the Wrights conducted on the Outer Banks. Some of the events planned for Oct. 21-24th: three 1911 gliders being built specifically for the centennial; international speaker symposium arranged by the Smithsonian; legends of hang gliding; a Ragtime gala (themed in the era of 1911); weather permitting-hang gliding demos, the 1911 gliders in flight, and sail plane fly-in at the Wright Brothers National Memorial; and activities for youth. Kidfest
Kidfest at Roanoke Island Festival Park-The event will be held on Friday, May 13 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30p.m. in the Outdoor Pavilion. It is sponsored by Children and Youth Partnership and is free and open to the public. Activities include: wildlife Olympics; tracks in the Sand; art and playdough; face painting; games and crafts; story time; puppet play; blocks and bubbles; seed planting; fishing activities; corn hole; Imagination Library; Fire Trucks; EMS; U.S. Coast Guard boat and Coastie. Western  Carolina University Gamelan players will feature examples of traditional Javanese music and contemporary pieces written for gamelan by American composers. . Barb Getchell, DCSW, LCSW, will explore the many physical and emotional changes that occur for mothers, fathers, and families in the early postpartum period. You'll also learn self-care strategies and tips for baby-proofing your marriage. Parents are encouraged to bring their individual concerns and questions. If you are a new parent, pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or are passionate about birth and babies, this FREE workshop is for you! Partners, family, friends, and babes in arms are welcome. Coastal Gardening Festival
The Coastal Gardening Festival, Saturday, May 14th, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., at Baum Senior Center. This annual event is sponsored by the Dare Extension Master Gardener Volunteers in association with the Dare County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The theme this year is "Gardening: Green Thumb NOT required". The Festival offers everything from plants, jewelry and home d�cor to yard art and food. Educational displays and demonstrations address composting, recycling, container gardening, native plants and pruning. Children's activities include gardening and tours of the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden. A raffle will support the ongoing maintenance and construction in the Arboretum and Teaching Garden. Lawrence Family Benefit

The fundraiser is on May 15 � 2:00pm - 6:00 pm, at the Outer Banks Brewing Station, organized by Surfrider Foundation, Outer Banks chapter. This is a family friendly friendly event and will include a silent art auction, cornhole tournament and surf/ skate yard sale. Music by Rubber Pants.Donations of used surfor skate gear are appreciated for the Gear Yard Sale. Items can include but are not limited to- surf or skate boards, clothing, fins, board bags, surf movies, basically ANYTHING surf or skate. All donations are tax deductible. Call Ivy at 256-0423 to arrange for a pickup.
