Community Health Assessment of Dare County Over the past year, the Dare County Department of Public Health and Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks have completed a comprehensive Community Health Assessment of Dare County. This assessment provides information about what residents in our community live with and die from, and sheds light on areas that need to improve in order to positively impact the health status of our community. Last week, CommonGood reported on the two remaining areas of concern reported by the Assessment: Death from Pneumonia and/or InfluenzaPneumonia and/or Influenza is the 3rd leading cause of death in Dare County, with our mortality rate of 49.8/100,000 being 145% higher than the North Carolina average of 20/100,000. This is a significant public health concern and warrants further investigation. Ongoing efforts have been targeted towards increasing influenza vaccination rates for Dare's residents but more needs to be done. Gail E Sonnesso M.S., Executive Director, of The GEM Center, sent this comment about Death from Pneumonia and/or Influenza. Dementia is the 6th leading cause of death and it is questionable... [that the above paragraph is correct]... due to what is put on the death certificate. If the person has dementia and progressed to the end stages and then dies with flu or pneumonia the cause of death might not list dementia but flu... The same is true for cancer and heart and other problems associated with aging. Since there is a stigma attached to dementia the Dr might list another disease for cause of death. (80% of people in nursing home have some form of dementia) In the age group of 75-79 based on incidence by age 20% will have dementia in 2030. And the incidence goes up to 50% at age 85. The community health assessment drives what programs are selected. Dementia is a national crisis and we in Dare County could be putting programs and supports in place now- before the numbers really peak. |

Community Care Clinic centralizes to provide better service
The Community Care Clinic of Dare (CCCD) provides free basic healthcare, prescription medication assistance, and wellness education to the uninsured and financially challenged who live or work in Dare County. The clinic opened its first clinic doors in 2005, with community support and a matching grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and continues to serve many who would otherwise not have access to healthcare.
The CCCD has continued to grow in the last six years, and has seen a large percentage growth in the last year. The CCCD in Frisco, located in the Dare County Satellite building, has doubled its Tuesday evening clinics from bimonthly to weekly. Together with the other clinics in Kitty Hawk and Manteo, the CCCD has increased provider hours during the past year and has therefore increased patient visits by nearly 31% during that time. New patient registration from October 2010 to March 2011 for all locations shows a 34% increase over new registrations for the same time period last year. In response to its growth and success, the CCCD is consolidating its Manteo and Kitty Hawk facilities into one centralized clinic to provide better services to its growing number of patients. The Kitty Hawk and Manteo clinics will close on Friday, April 29. The new clinic, located at 2808 S. Croatan Hwy, Suite A, in Nags Head (at the corner of Barnes and Hwy 158), opens on May 9, will provide care for its existing and new patients. Potential patients are encouraged to call the CCCD at 261-3041 to help determine eligibility for registration. The CCCD offers volunteer opportunities for a wide variety of skill sets, and interested volunteers may contact the CCCD at the above phone number. For more information, all are welcome to visit our website at www.dareclinic.org
