Undocumented: A New Dream
 | A NEW DREAM |
Immigration is a very hot topic right now. It's easy when you see stories on the news, to presume that those represent the majority of immigrants. It's only when you have personal relationships with immigrants, that you realize some of those stereotypes might not actually be accurate. According to the Billy Graham Center, less than one in ten immigrants will ever be welcomed into the home of an American. Given that Christians have been commanded to welcome strangers, that's a pretty embarrassing statistic. So we're challenging you to change it: invite an immigrant (or a whole family) over for a meal or for coffee as a chance to show kindness and to learn. (If you are an immigrant yourself, you're responsible to be hospitable, too: invite someone whom you suspect might not know a lot of immigrants to join you and your family for a meal).
is a media-driven, culture-shaping movement seeking to inspire and mobilize young Evangelical Christians towards championing the needs of immigrants. We're creating provocative, response-oriented short films paired with intentional experiences for groups and individuals. It will inspire you to better understand and enter the immigration conversation. We will challenge our audience to move beyond any existing personal or media-driven bias and toward active involvement in social change. World Relief is the parent organization of this not-for-profit movement.

Dare and Currituck 2011 County Health Rankings
The 2011 County Health Rankings is a collection of reports that compare data from a variety of sources to determine the rankings of counties in every state across the nation. These comparisons demonstrate that where we live matters.
Out of the 100 North Carolina counties, the current rankings for Dare is 7th in Health Outcomes and 25th in Health Factors. Currituck County was 48th, 53rd respectively. Researchers used five measures to assess the level of health by county, including: the rate of people dying before age 75, the percent of people who report being in fair or poor health, the numbers of days people report being in poor physical or mental health, and the rate of low birth weight infants. The report also evaluates key behaviors and environmental factors that imp

act people's health such as: smoking, obesity, excessive drinking, access to healthcare, air pollution levels, access to recreational facilities and healthy foods, rates of unemployment, high school graduation, and violent crime, as well as the number of children living in poverty. Put together, these factors provide an overview of the health of our community- including both our strengths and weaknesses. Community Health Assessment of Dare County Over the past year, the Dare County Department of Public Health and Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks have completed a comprehensive Community Health Assessment of Dare County. This assessment provides information about what residents in our community live with and die from, and sheds light on areas that need to improve in

order to positively impact the health status of our community. If your organization would like a presentation on the Assessment please call Laura Willingham at . 252-475-5079 . Health ChallengesAssociated with AgingAs baby boomers continue to age, it is an obvious fact that communities everywhere are grappling with health issues related to aging. Cancer, diseases of the heart, chronic lower respiratory disease, and influenza/pneumonia are the 4 leading causes of death for individuals 65 years of age or older in Dare. Because the proportion of the Dare County population age 60 and older is larger than the proportion of this age group statewide, more and different health and/or social services may be required for this group than the rest of Dare's population. When you consider that the proportion of every age group 60 and older is projected to grow in Dare County through 2020, you get a sense of the impact this changing demographic may have on our community. By 2030, the rate of growth in the 60-64 population is expected to reverse to a decline, while growth in the 70 and older age group will continue to accelerate beyond 2020. The age group of 75-79 is predicted to grow by seventy five percent (75%) between 2010 and 2030 from three percent (3%) to five percent (5%) of the total county population. Death from Pneumonia and/or InfluenzaPneumonia and/or Influenza is the 3rd leading cause of death in Dare County, with our mortality rate of 49.8/100,000 being 145% higher than the North Carolina average of 20/100,000. This is a significant public health concern and warrants further investigation. Ongoing efforts have been targeted towards increasing influenza vaccination rates for Dare's residents but more needs to be done. We hope you will join us in this effort! |
