Surfriders Meet March 16
Food Dudes in KDH, at 6:30pm. Nominating Board members, and going over over the annual scholarship committee and paddle race duties. Proven Surfrider favorites are July 's Paddle Race, October's TrashFest, June's International Surfing Day. These are the opportunities to give back to the community and remind ourselves - and the rest of the Outer Banks -- why Surfrider exists: to protect our opportunities to enjoy the ocean. We're encouraging everyone to stage their own beach cleanup once a month.
The Outer Banks Surfrider Foundation is responsible for coordinating the Adopt-A-Beach program in Dare County. This program involves individual, business, and organization sponsors willing to adopt a local public beach access and keep it clean at a minimum of six times a year.
The towns in which public accesses are available agree to assist in coordination by providing sponsorship signs for the access offering publicity to the sponsor. Sponsors are required to fill out data sheets each time an access is cleaned, and return it to the Surfrider Foundation. The data sheets record detailed information regarding types of debris and quantities found. This information is compiled and sent to each town and may be used in national and regional research projects.

Low Infant Death Rate A community's infant death rate (the number per 1,000 who die in their 1st year of life) is considered to be a strong indicator of overall health, reflective of the quality of prenatal and birth care available as well as the health behaviors of pregnant women and parents of infants. Dare County's infant mortality rate is 6.2/1,000 live births, compared with 8.4/1,000 statewide. The percent of pregnant women in Dare County that receive prenatal care in the first trimester is also higher at eighty eight percent (88%) compared to eighty one percent (81%) statewide. Good Surface Water QualityThis shining star reflects beautifully on Dare County. Dare County ranks among the top twenty percent (20%) of counties nationwide and among the top ten percent (10%) of North Carolina coastal counties for surface water quality based on the fact that only two percent (2%) of our surface waters are threatened or impaired. Surface water quality is a good indicator of the quality of our recreational water and our waters are some of the cleanest around. How's that for a news splash! Good Air QualityHere's a breath of fresh air! Dare County lacks the major industries or other sources of toxic release emitters that could negatively impact our air quality. Combined with the sea breezes our location provides, ambient air quality problems are a rare occurrence. Look for Red Flags next week.

Nature Conservancy and Volunteers
Since 2002 The Nature Conservancy has helped to construct over 65 acres of oyster reef in the Pamlico Sound. It is estimate that today's oyster reefs in the Pamlico Sound only cover about 50 percent of the area where they once existed. Oyster reefs are vital to the Sound's health.
Volunteers are needed in bagging oyster shells and building oyster reef in the sound. on March 26 and April 9 - 8:30am - 12:30pm. The work days will be held at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers should report at 8:30 a.m. to the refuge kiosk located of Highway 64 at Milltail Road. Volunteers can expect to spend three to four hours on site. The work can be hot or cold depending on the season and it does require some lifting. Participants should wear close-toed shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats, and bring water and a snack. The Conservancy will provide work gloves and other materials. Sponsorships and Volunteers Needed for 1st Pridefest.
OBX Pride celebrates and promotes the history, diversity and future prosperity of the Outer Banks community. It encourages the acceptance of differences in all individuals without bias; to recognize that it is the right of all individuals to receive mutual respect, and to create positive interaction through outreach and coalition building. To provide environments for individuals and groups to learn from each other: to create supportive environments and networks to empower positive change, and to recognize that a denial of equality for one is a denial of equality for all.To support or volunteer.
