Peace and Justice Coalition Documentary on March 15.
7:00, at Kelly's Restaurant. Come early and share Outer Banks Style Dastarkhan, Afghan tradition of a table spread, including hummus and pita points. $7.00 donation. Afghan Star - a Pop Idol-style TV series - is searching the country for the next generation of music stars. Considered sacrilegious by the Mujahiddeen and outright banned by the Taliban (1996-2001), music has come to symbolize freedom for the youth.
Millions of people watch the show (11 mn watched the final - a third of the country) and vote by SMS from their cell phone for their favourite singers. For many, this is the first time they have encountered democracy: one man or one women equals one vote. All - the different genders, ethnic groups, age sectors - are equal. This is a highly radical idea in a country still essentially based on a male-dominated tribal elder system. For the first time young people, ethnic minorities and women have an arena in which to shine. And at last, the people are allowed to vote for who they want.

Teen PregnancyTeen pregnancy is a critical public health issue that affects the health, social, educational and economic well being of both the mother and child. Teen pregnancy is further linked to other social issues including welfare dependency, out-of-wedlock births, responsible fatherhood, and workforce development to name a few. The positive news is that Dare's teen pregnancy rate has decreased every year between 2005 and 2008. The number of teen pregnancies in 2008 (40) was 27% lower than the number in 2005 (55). The pregnancy rate for girls age 15-19 in Dare County is 39/1,000 compared to the state rate of 58.6/1,000. "A Sa fe Place to Live"Ninety six percent (96%) of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that Dare County is a "safe place to live". The research data supports this perception with Dare's rate of violent crime twenty nine percent (29%) lower than the rest of the state. Dare County's violent crime rate is 335.6/100,000, while North Carolina's rate is 474.2/100,000.
