Audrey's Heart Presentation

on Women's Heart Health

Dave Parks of Duck recently lost his beloved wife, Audrey, to a heart attack she might have avoided if Dave had paid closer attention to the signals. Parks's wish now is to educate as many people as possible about the importance of observing and listening more intently to the women they love.

http://www.conferoinc.com/images/uploads/blog/go-red-for-women-heart(1).jpgAs part of heart month, the local council of the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a talk and Q&A by Cardiac Physician's Assistant Edward Healy on women's heart health issues, Monday, February 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Holy Redeemer by the Sea Churchl, Kitty Hawk.

LearnmoreThe symptoms for women's heart issues are not always the same as for men, so it's important to learn the signs and symptoms of potential women's heart concerns," Paying very close attention to the signs early on may make the difference in the life or death of a woman very near and dear to you."

If interested in attending please email Ed Beckley at ejbeckleyjr@yahoo.com by Feb. 25, so the Knights have ample food and chairs on hand.

Minton Fund and Senior Games.  We have asked local shops and boutiques to provide clothing for our volunteer models, keeping in mind the theme of this Fashion Show: Candy Land.  Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, March 1st, at $15.00 for adults, and $10.00 for children 12 and under, dinner included.  If you would like to purchase a ticket, please contact Emily Karr at (252) 475-5638 or Charlotte Midgett at (252) 475-5920.

Priceless Pieces Quilt Show

The annual showing of handcrafted quilts - old and new - featuring colors, designs and textures opens Sunday, February 27, with a public reception from 2-4 p.m.  It is on display daily through March 26, Monday- Friday 9  Throughout March, the Teacup Quilters gallery-sit daily armed with years of combined experience in everything from hand and machine quilting to appliqu making and embroidery.

Visitors walk through aisles of ceiling to floor quilts, which in the past ranged in date from Civil War times to modern day. All quilts have an Eastern North Carolina tie. People generously lend their beloved coverings that either are owned or crafted by an Outer Banks resident or devotee, which makes for a fresh offering each year. The Teacup Quilters enjoy crafting annual mini quilts that are sewn with a theme in mind. This year's Yellow Brick Road creations fit beautifully with the gallery's 2011 theme of Art Tales.  Thttp://roanokeisland.com/files/Images/Features/Teacup-Quilter%27s-Raffle-Quilt-2011-400x394.jpghe mini quilts will visually connect as a yellow brick road travels through each individual piece.

An annual highlight is the Teacup Quilter's raffle quilt, which is on display throughout the exhibition. A stunning example of their handiwork, the quilt will go home with a lucky winner with proceeds from all raffle tickets going to charity. For more information call (252) 475-1500 or visit roanokeisland.com.

Vocational Rehabilitation for People with Disabilities

http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dvrs/library/images/LogoWeb2.jpgVocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a part of the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).  VR has been in existence as a government agency since World War I. VR services are provided in most states. VR is primarily federally funded but administered locally by state government.

VR serves working age adults with chronic physical or mental impairments who desire to return to work or who need assistance in retaining their job. VR clients must pass the financial needs test if the client is requesting cost services such as medical treatment or college tuition.   This requirement is waived for VR client's who have been determined disabled by the Social Security Administration (SSA).http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dvrs/library/images/WhatAreEmpServices.jpg

VR services are free for eligible clients and may include financial assistance for medical needs, physical rehab, and rehab equipment and rehab technology.   VR provides funding for training needs including college tuition, vocational training, paid internships, on-the-job training (OJT) and small business development. Other services include professional referral to community based rehab programs for skills training, job coaching, anLearnmored supported employment services.  Finally, VR provides job search and job placement assistance, employment marketing skills classes, vocational assessment and vocational counseling to its clients.

Crucial to VR's mission are North Carolina's businesses who each year hire thousands of individuals served by VR. Because each of our referrals is screened, employers can feel more confident that they're a good prospect for their company, and they benefit from VR's customized follow-up to help make sure the new employee and the job remain a good match for each other.

Screening, job-matching and training can reduce employers' recruitment time and costs. Businesses can benefit-at no cost-from on-site consultations by professionals like our rehabilitation engineers who help ensure that the physical workplace is a good fit for the new employee. They may also enjoy tax incentives for hiring a VR referral.

For further questions about VR services or to schedule an appointment with a VR counselor, please contact the Vocational Rehabilitation office located in Elizabeth City, NC at 252-331-4768.

2011 Ride To A Wish

2011 Ride To A Wish
Our goal this year is to grant four wishes, that's $26,000.00 which is daunting... but WE CAN DO IT!!!!

TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, WE NEED MORE RIDERS AND MORE SPONSORS!!!! Bring one rider with you, if everyone that sacrificed last year and rode with us just brought one rider with them we would be at 60 riders. That opens the doors to a lot more potential sponsors!!! To help towards that end, we have added a 33 mile ride to the 50 and 100 to get more people involved. Motorcyclists Are Welcome!

Learnmore

This year we will be allowing motorcyclists to join in on the 100-mile ride through scenic Tyrell County. Motorcyclists will depart at 2:00 p.m. All bikers are required to pay the same $20 registration fee as cyclists and raise at least $75 in donations.Find us on Facebook

Here are summaries of two separate bills that, if they pass, will have a harmful effect on immigrant communities across North Carolina.   Learn more about immigrants in North Carolina. Learnmore

H 11, No Postsecondary Education/Illegal Aliens
H 11 would prevent undocumented immigrants from attending any of the state's universities or community colleges. (Other than in quoting the bill's title, we will not use its offensive term for undocumented immigrants. We do not believe than any of God's children are "illegal," nor are the connotations of "alien" appropriate for anyone created in God's image.) Currently undocumented students are permitted to enroll in both the UNC system and the community college system, but they are required to pay out-of-state tuition (which, being greater than the cost of their education, subsidizes the tuition of in-state students). Not watchsurprisingly, there are very few undocumented students enrolled. Estimates for the community college system are that they number about 200, out of hundreds of thousands enrolled in the system.

H 28, DHHS to Provide Law Enforcement Information
H 28 would require the state's Department of Health and Human Services to give law enforcement agencies and officers certain personal information on those receiving services from DSS and for whom there is an active investigation or outstanding criminal process. Information to be disclosed would include: full name, date of birth, Social Security number, addresses and phone numbers (past and present), names of family members, and addresses and phone numbers for immediate family members.
