NC Aquarium Seafood Series Kickoff on February 9

seafood imageChef John Romm* from Keefer's Bar & Grill in Powells Point, N.C. will be our first Seafood Series presenter of 2011 at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island on February 9.   

Participants will tantalize their tasted buds with new recipes from the sea, presented by talented local restaurant chefs. Class participants will receive biological information, copies of recipes, and a savory sample of each dish. Cost is $20. There are only 20 participants per class! Caring Effectively for a person with Dementia
The GEM Center, a non-profit organization providing dementia care, education and support within the OBX community will present a six week class "Caring Effectively" beginning February 15th.    Designed for family care givers as well as health professionals, the course has been well received within the Alzheimer research community.  Lisa P. Gwyther, education director for the Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Duke University has praised the "Caring Effectively" curriculum, calling the series of classes "rich, practical and comprehensive."  Each two hour session will address a specific aspect of providing effective care to the elderly especially those who suffer from dementia.  Topics include understanding the progression of the disease, how to communicate effectively at each stage of the disease, examples of successful behavioral interventions and choosing a caregiver.  The course, designed by GEM Executive Director and   All sessions are from 7 - 9 PM and will be held at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Church located on Kitty Hawk Road in Kitty Hawk.  Scheduled class dates are February 15 and 22; March 1, 8, 22 and 29.  There is a fee of $15.00 to cover the cost of materials.  Interested participants may receive certification from Alzheimer's North Carolina Inc. for an additional $10.00.   Pre-registration is suggested:  visit the GEM website at www.thegemcenter.org for more details or call Executive Director Gail Sonnesso at 252-480-3354. 

Workshop Provides Artistic Way to Cope with Cancer

 

Art for Healing is a series of Saturday workshops designed to introduce cancer patients to accessing art as a unique and creative way to express the complex emotions and stages of the cancer journey. Participants in the first workshop, "Artful Journaling," to be held on February 5th, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., will be guided to find strength and companionship through journaling. The workshop will be led by local artist Liz Corsa and writer Eve Turek

A second series, "Beading Cancer," is scheduled for March 5th, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  All materials for the workshops are provided free to participants. Seating for both workshops is limited so advance registration is necessary by calling 449-7350.

at the Beach Food Pantry There are many ways to become involved in helping the Beach Food Pantry. We are open Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm. volunteerYouth Partnership for Dare County is looking for caring volunteers to tutor at-risk preschool children using the WINGS preschool literacy program. WINGS volunteers will play literacy-based games at least once a week, focusing on memory, comprehension, problem-solving, creative thinking, and decision-making.  The typical time spent volunteering each week is 1-2 hours. Children and Youth Partnership is a non-profit organization serving children, youth, and families in Dare County. The Partnership administers the state Smart Start program for Dare County for children birth through age 5 and is a central source of information about activities, programs and resources for children

Children at Play - the Outer Banks Children's Museum is looking for volunteers!  We are looking for individuals who would be interested in assisting in building, painting or creating new exhibits.  Exhibits are designed to teach and inspire young children in our community.  This is a fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity.  If interested, please contact us at the museum at 261 0290.  Children at Play is a locally founded 501(c)(3) non profit organization.

The Dare Literacy Council is looking for volunteers to help with fundraising, administrative tasks, publicity, and tutor/student support. If you have an education background, volunteers are needed to help with assessing students and developing tutor seminars. If you are fluent in Spanish, help is needed communicating with students. The DLC is an all-volunteer organization so as little as one hour is a tremendous boost to helping the DLC continue to serve the community. The Senior Nutrition's Home Delivered Meals Program serves seniors 60 years or older, homebound  and unable to prepare a nutritious meal. The Albemarle Commission needs volunteers to deliver meals to seniors in Manteo and in the beach area, Monday through Friday. Exceptional Children (Part Two)

A wealth of information on exceptional children is provided by the North Carolina Department of Education, Exceptional Children Division.  Instructional Support and Related Services provides leadership and direction related to academic support, assessment and instructional planning of students with disabilities. While much of this material is aimed at teachers and administrators, caregivers and those in the community that support them, can learn a great deal.

Individualized Education Program. The IEP is a written statement for a student with a disability that is developed, at least annually, by a team of professionals knowledgeable about the student and the parent. The plan describes the strengths of the child and the concerns of the parents for enhancing the education of their child, and when, where, and how often services will be provided. The IEP is required by federal law for all exceptional children and must include specific information about how the student will be served and what goals he or she should be meeting. On February 3, Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, 6:30-8:30 pm, the Autism Support Group is encouraging members and friends to bring ideas to the meeting of hands on tools/interventions, etc that you have used to help children on the spectrum in different ways.  We are looking at helping parenthttp://fashionablygeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/bagoftricks.jpgs, teachers and professionals to be able to walk away from the meeting with a bigger bag of tricks to put into the collection you have already...and having added to other peoples' bags of tricks.  If you feel that you don't have anything to offer, please still come as we would love to have you there at the meeting. Oxford Houses
http://www.oxfordhousenc.org/SMDecors/Web%20Dark.bmpLearnmoreA 35 year old program has come to the Outer Banks. Oxford Houses are a clean and sober housing option for individuals in recovery. The first North Carolina Oxford Houses were established in Durham and Asheville, NC in the spring of 1991. North Carolina is part of a network of 1,400 Oxford Houses with more than 10,000 beds. As of August 2010, there are 140 houses in North Carolina, with locations in 28 cities. With an average of 8 beds per house, there are more than 1,000 Oxford House beds in the state. Individuals typically enter an Oxford House after completing a drug and alcohol treatment program. Estate Planning 101:  What You Need to Know and Do Before It Is Too Late
lwv elder lawJean-Louise Dixon (Attorney at Law) and Julia Taft (Enrolled Agent) will lead a panel discussion on estate planning and wills, living wills, powers of attorney, Medicare, Medicaid, and estate taxes.  What are the basic documents that you should have in place and why?  Are you prepared for a significant medical event?  Addressing these topics and more, this program is scheduled to take place from 2-4 pm on Wednesday, February 9, at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills. 
 
Estate Planning 101 is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Dare County (LWV - DARE) The public and LWV-DARE members are encouraged to attend this important presentation which is free of charge.  Light refreshments will be served.

Currituck Animal Shelter Gives Cupid Some Help
The Currituck Animal Shelter is giving Cupid some help just in time for Valentine's Day by discounting the adoption fee of all pets by $20.00 during the week of February 7-14.  Why give your loved one an old Currituck Animal Assistanceunhealthy box of candy when you can give the gift that keeps on giving love?  If you just pop the question, "Will you be mine?" to one of the adorable shelter dogs or cats,  it's guaranteed that each pet will be delighted to give you and your loved ones all of his love!
 
In additon to coming with a loving heart, all dogs and cats come with 30 days of free pet insurance, are microchipped, have a rabies vaccination and all of their normal vaccinations and tests, are de-wormed,  and are either already spayed or neutered or have a voucher that will cover the cost of this.
