Losing someone we love is one of the most painful realities we face in life

grief
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

.  It requires us to start over again in a new and unfamiliar landscape, life without our loved one in it. While this journey undoubtedly feels lonely and frightening, sharing this journey with others can be healing.

Dare Home Health and Hospice, an agency of the Dare County Department of Public Health, and Twiford Funeral Homes invite members of our community that have experienced a loss to join us in remembrance and celebration of those they have loved and lost. The 9th annual Community Memorial Service will be held on December 19th from 3-5pm at the Dare County Community Center in Manteo.  The program will include music, poetry reading, prayer and a calling of the names ceremony, to help those in attendance experience a heightened sense of connection to the person(s) they are remembering.  R find out more about the hospice program, please call Ellie Ward, Nursing Director with Dare Home Health and Hospice at (252) 475-5034.

Possibilities by Carol Castellano

It took my daughter Serena a long time to decide just what she wanted to be when she grew up, whereas, my son was only four when he decided that he would be a dinosaur scientist. It wasn't until she was seven that Serena realized that her destiny in life was to be a folksinger...

A Dad's Expectations by Mark McClain

When we found out that Macy was blind, my first thought was, "Oh my God, what in the world will she ever do? What a pathetic life she will lead, and we will be saddled with her till the day we die." This wasn't what I envisioned in becoming a parent...

Listening to the Leaves by Carole Conrad

Sara, the most exciting thing happened to me today! I want so much to tell you all about it and share my excitement with you, but at three years of age you wouldn't understand the significance of my discovery. So I'll share it with you in writing...

Hands of Hopehands of hopeCommunity Choir presents O Holy Night, A Christmas Musical
December 10: Liberty Christian Fellowship
December 11: First Assembly of God - Manteo
December 12: Whole Ministries Center - Wanchese
All services begin at 7:00pm

What is Hands of Hope? It is a community initiative arising from a desire to ensure that no one walks a cancer journey alone. We will not duplicate services, but will provide
support in areas that complement existing community resources.
Who are the Lay Navigators? Volunteer members of your own community who have received special
training regarding:
 the basic understanding of what
cancer is and is not
how to communicate with the patient and family affected with cancer
 the need to maintain confidentiality
 the understanding of the availability
of community resources.
Why are we needed? helpinghand photoWe are needed because of the large
number of people who are faced with a cancer diagnosis and find they do not have the support they need. Dare
County is a community that has a reputation of supporting anyone facing a crisis. We are here to help.

How Hands of Hope can help you:
  • Counseling - We find counseling services for patients, caregivers and family
     members.
  • Resources - We help you learn more about community resources and how to access them.
  • Transportation - We help find resources for transportation to medical appointments through the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery
  • Program and other local programs. We can also find transportation to religious services.
  • Helping Children - We pick children up from school and provide them with a safe environment with people the cancer family knows. This service is available when caregivers are away from home taking the patient to treatments and medical visits. We can help with homework too!
  • Chores - We find help to do the yard work, run errands, prepare meals and pickup prescriptions.
  • Respite - We help find time and resources to give caregivers time off.
  • Pet Care -We find helping hands to care for animals when you cannot.
  • Phone Calls - We help you keep your family and friends informed when you cannot due to medical emergencies, treatments and follow up visits.
  • Social Outings - We organize outings should you desire to interact with other families facing the same journey.
  • Specific Needs - We know that each cancer family has different needs.
  • Our goal is to try and help while maintaining your need for confidentiality.

Currituck Kids
currituck kidsProvides assistance to underprivileged kids in Currituck County. Currituck Kids is a component fund of the North Carolina
 Community Foundation
through the Currituck-Dare Affiliate.  Currituck Kids was formed for the sole purpose of providing Currituck County's school-aged students with the necessities to enhance their total school experience and ensuring they reach their full potential with dignity and respect.  Accomplishments include:
"No Kid Leaves Without a Book"-Working in conjunction with the media specialists in the elementary schools, mini-grants were providd to the elementary schools allowing needy students to purchase a book from the Spring Book Fair.

"Real World Project"-Working with Social Services, we assisted in providing support for this program and are now taking a leadership role in planning the program for the upcoming spring.  In this program, real world activities such as interviewing, opening a bank account, and determining a household budget are introduced to high school students during the morning sessions.

The JP Knapp Early College iSchool, we helped needy students with the cost of insurance for the computers that were required for the kids to be able to take and use their computers at home.
We have provided countless students with coats, shoes, glasses, toiletries and clothing. We've supplied mattresses (That's right! If the kids don't get a good night's sleep, it is hard for them to be effective in school.), and baseball gloves so that children could participate in afterschool activities.

Our membership has more than tripled since we first began about two years ago. More involvement from the community in order to meet the growing needs of our kids.  Our scope of work for the future will focus on the following projects:

December get-together will be held on Thursday, December 9th at 7 pm at the Black Pelican Oceanfront Cafe in the alcove.

The Nature Conservancy has recently initiated a climate change adaptation project in Dare County in which oyster restoration is a primary component.  Oyster reefs are being constructed along shorelines exposed to high energy wave action to produce a natural buffer for the projected increase in frequency and severity of nor'easters and hurricanes associated with a changing climate.  The reefs diminish wave energy, creating semi-sheltered shorelines and reducing erosion.  Reefs also provide valuable ecosystem services such as filtering water, sequestering carbon, and creating habitat.

Come learn more about how the Nature Conservancy is dealing with climate change issues, and meet Brian Boutin, the Climate Adaptation Project Director based at Nags Head Woods.

Thursday, December 9, 2010, Black Pelican Oceanfront Cafe, MP 4,  7 - 7:30 pm - mingle; 7:30 - 8 pm - speaker
