Community Memorial Service

Losing someone we love is one of the most painful realities we face in life

grief
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

.  It requires us to start over again in a new and unfamiliar landscape, life without our loved one in it. While this journey undoubtedly feels lonely and frightening, sharing this journey with others can be healing.

Dare Home Health and Hospice, an agency of the Dare County Department of Public Health, and Twiford Funeral Homes invite members of our community that have experienced a loss to join us in remembrance and celebration of those they have loved and lost. The 9th annual Community Memorial Service will be held on December 19th from 3-5pm at the Dare County Community Center in Manteo.  The program will include music, poetry reading, prayer and a calling of the names ceremony, to help those in attendance experience a heightened sense of connection to the person(s) they are remembering.  Resources on grief and loss will be available without charge. Light refreshments will be served and attendees are encouraged to connect with others in attendance.

We encourage family, friends and neighbors to accept this charge; if you know someone who has experienced the loss of a family member or loved one, invite them to come with you to this memorial service.  Together, we can help them carry their burden.  For more information about the Community Memorial Service or to find out more about the hospice program, please call Ellie Ward, Nursing Director with Dare Home Health and Hospice at (252) 475-5034.

FOCUS ON:
People with Disabilities

http://hugh.ncsmartstart.org/wp-content/themes/sweb/images/logo.jpg

Nationally, approximately 16% of all children have some form of disability, including speech and language delays, cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, and emotional/behavioral problems. The numbers are even higher for low-income children. About 70% of children with disabilities are not identified before they enter school. Early identification is critical and has long-term impact on child's well-being and academic success. Smart Start is working to ensure that more children are screened for developmental delays and referred to services for help before they start school.

Smart Start is the state's early childhood infrastructure. Smart Start local partnerships serve as a system to convene stakeholders to assess local needs; ensure accountability; and leverage community, state and federal resources. Local partnerships have established community networks that bridge education, health services, and family supports to best meet the needs of young children and their families.

Stephanie Fanjul Interview on Smart Start

The Smart Start network of 77 local partnerships serving all 100 North Carolina counties is the envy of the nation. Federal and private funders have invested millions of dollars in North Carolina's early childhood system because Smart Start provides the network on the ground that is needed to produce efficient and effective results.

The power of Smart Start is in its public/private partnership that mandates outcomes, while giving communities local control to determine the best approach to achieving them.

Smart Start's Mission is to advance a high quality, comprehensive, accountable system of care and education for every child beginning with a healthy birth.

Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County is a private, non-profit organization designed to provide programs and services to children and their families in Dare County. Created following a State of the Child Conference in 1994, the organization was charged with focusing on issues brought forward at that conference, and worked to establish the Wright Place for Youth and the Dare County Youth Center. In 1997, the Partnership began administering North Carolina's nationally recognized Smart Start Early Childhood program for Dare County, and today offers a variety of programs and resources to ensure the healthy development of all children from birth to five years of age.

The Child Service Coordination Program (CSC) offers information, support, and resources to help assure that children grow up healthy, safe, well adjusted, and ready for school. Specially trained staff will listen to your concerns about your child and offer information or resources as needed. For families whose children are experiencing a developmental delay, staff helps to arrange medical evaluations and referrals to programs which will help your child reach their full potential.

Tell Congress: Pass the DREAM Act

Asset Mapping Hatteras Island
assetplanningThe Hatteras Island Asset Mapping Project will get underway on December 7 at the Hatteras Connection Seafood Dinner Fundraiser at the Hatteras Village Civic Center.

"The map is one way to tell our story, to share what makes our island a special place, and to help preserve the sense of place that has supported our community for generations," said Susan West, a Buxton resident.

Guests attending the fundraiser are invited to identify and map cultural, natural, and business assets in the island's seven villages. Cultural assets might be a church, a place where children play, or a place with special significance, such as an old fish camp or mail boat landing.A natural asset might be a favorite place to watch sunsets, and a business asset might be a shop that sells locally-produced art or jewelry or locally-caught seafood. Assets could include museums, historic buildings and sites, celebrations and events, commercial and charter boats, piers, fish houses, trails, nature reserves, fishing, hunting and bird-watching guide services, motels, watersport businesses, tackle and bait shops, community organizations and services, landmarks and historic place-names, and marinas.

The seafood dinner fundraiser benefits the Hatteras Island Food Pantry and Hatteras Meals, Inc.  Last year the event raised almost $3000, and helped stock the pantry's shelves for the holiday season.

The Mapping Project is a community-based initiative funded under a NC Rural Economic Development Center) innovative economic development grant awarded the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center.  Asset mapping is one part of a regional community-based initiative led by the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center in Harkers Island. The primary goal of the grant is to catalyze job retention, supplemental income generation and small business development in natural resource-based and asset-based sectors, especially the commercial fishing and emerging eco-/heritage tourism industries, in villages located along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway.  Duke University also provided funding for the Mapping Project. For more information, contact West at (252) 995-4131 or email ridgeroad@earthlink.net.

watchThe Alzheimer's Foundation of America, a leading national nonprofit organization headquartered in New York, will be presenting the nation's first Alzheimer's disease "Together for Care" telethon on December 4 in 16 major NBC markets and telecast nationally. Hosted by Al Roker, it brings together leading celebrities, including performances by Kris Allen, Shontelle and Wilson Phillips.

Now is the time to unveil Alzheimer's disease--bring the disease front and center to the American public at a time when the incidence is skyrocketing. With the first wave of baby boomers turning 65 next year--and advanced age the greatest known risk factor for the brain disorder, it is time to rally the nation together to let people know help is available and raise funds for care and cure. AT AFA, we often refer to Alzheimer's disease to where AIDs was a dozen years ago--it's time to talk about it. We believe holding this telethon will get the nation talking. For more information, visit www.alzfdn.org.
