Getting My Head Out of the Sand
Tuesday, 7:00 pm: Waiting for my Internet cable to be fixed. Using a pen (a rare occasion), I write down the reasons my attempt to educate myself on climate change has been an almost total failure. Not necessarily in order, I listed 1) too busy juggling daily tasks; not very entertaining; competing with other books and television (Project Runway and the BBC series MI5), and waning passion.
Tuesday 8:30 pm. Cable back up and check my Google Alerts on Climate Change. The first link is to an event in London, "Engaging with Climate Change: Psychoanalytic Perspectives Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th October 2010" Papers included "Unconscious obstacles to caring for the planet," "Engaging with the natural world and with human nature" and "Climate change denial in a perverse culture." Andrew Revkins New York Times, summarizes the conference as Shrinking the Climate Problem.
Is this serendipitous or what? Do I have problems with " the unconscious dimensions of climate change? Are anxiety and fear profoundly impeding [my] abilities to respond proactively and creatively to our impending crises? Am I part of the inertia and paralysis ... of both the public and our politicians?
I agree that I am experiencing a polarized, confused, paralyzed discourse around global warming. This is because the unconscious, affective dimensions of these extremely challenging and often frightening problems. I have been using my ability to split up the world and internal experiences so we don't have to feel anxiety, pain or fear.
Yes, yes, yes. Talk therapy? Where's the couch?

Becoming your Best
Marian Wright Edelman said: Service is the rent we pay for being. "It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time." A poster with that quote is available from the Institute on Disability Bookstore. This quote reminds me of one of the stories on George Graham's website, Becoming your Best. Nineteen year-old Nicky Bibbey, a Hatteras resident, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age 3. When he graduated from high school, his immediate future was pretty uncertain. Nicky had learned weaving from one of his assistants and had woven for Endless Possibilities. But he needed a loom at home if he was to continue. The word went out to the community. Time passed and his mom grew more concerned about meaningful work in her son's future. But the possible happened when the Technology Students Association club at Manteo Middle School joined forces with Hotline, Dare County Arts Council, Manns Harbor Storage, Manteo Ace Hardware store, and fiber artist, Inger Seitz. A new loom, warped and ready, was delivered to Nicky's home. His mother said, "You never know where this could take him." [First published in 2009 by the Island Free Press] This story is a great example of helping those who are on their journey to become their best - and about and the generous service of people and organizations in our community. It also reminds us that we are not talking about disabilities but people with disabilities.
Kudos to George M. Graham Jr., the Director for Exceptional Children and section 504, Dare County Schools.
