Museum of the Albemarle Benefit Dance
On Saturday, July 31 from 7pm-11pm the Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle will bring back the excitement of summertime at the beach with "Saturday Night at the Nags Head Casino". Please join us as we revisit the Nags Head Casino, if you'd like a trip back "to a simpler place in time." All funds raised will benefit the Museum's programs. July 31 7:00pm - 11:00pm,   Museum of the Albemarle, 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC

the Casino continued to draw crowds in the 1960s and 1970s when bands like Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs and the Hot Nuts played for dancers who no longer Jitterbugged, but opted for the Twist or the Shag. The Nags Head Casino was a place to take a date, or to meet someone new. Some couples who met and courted at the Casino, later went on to marry. Its location on the Beach Road in front of Jockey's Ridge gave young lovers a private place to escape for a romantic walk while the sounds of the music drifted into the warm summer night. Kitty Hawk Kites and Jockey's Ridge Crossing now occupied the site of the beloved Casino.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month
The Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) is celebrating August as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) by encouraging everyone to make sure they are current on their vaccinations. Vaccine preventable diseases and their complications are responsible for more than 30,000 deaths in the United States each year" said Anne Thomas, Director of the Dare County Department of Public Health.  "Ensuring your families' vaccinations are up to date is an effective way to prevent serious life-threatening diseases".

Vaccines are important across the life span. From a child getting vaccinated against measles and whooping cough to an adolescent being protected against meningitis, to an older adult avoiding the pain of shingles, there are good reasons for everyone to stay current with their immunizations and discuss vaccines with their health care provider.

You can learn more about vaccines at the Center for Disease Control Webssite.  Childhood Immunization Scheduler

Girl Scouts Take Action and Have a New National Brand to Share
On August 7, hundreds of Girl Scout adult volunteers from all over northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia will gather at the annual Girl Scout Kick-Off held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Chesapeake to be trained to empower girls to take action in their community and beyond. Many Girl Scouts today are looking beyond their own backyards and are trying to solve the larger problems they see in the world.

one"The work our girls do here affects more than just our small communities; it has global reach," Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast Chief Executive Office Tracy Keller said.  "The new campaign is a great way to show the world what we've been doing, what we are doing now and what we will be doing in the future."

After extensive research and development, Girl Scouts debuted a long-term, multichannel brand campaign that is designed to reacquaint the country with the iconic organization and communicate the power girls have to change the world through Girl Scouting. The campaign is known by the tagline What Did You Today?, It paves the road for the upcoming national centennial celebration.  In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate one hundred years of building girls of courage, confidence and character.  To commemorate the milestone, Girl Scouts nationwide will perform a community action project focused on having a significant impact on the environment.  Girl Scouts will carry out service projects that improve their local environment and, in turn, inspire schools and their communities to do the same.
