Local Youths Participate in NPS Conservation Corps Program
nps youth
For the second summer in a row, the National Park Service has hired a group of local youth under the NPS Youth Con- servation Corps program. The crew, which is partially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be performing a variety of "hands on" field work for eight weeks this summer. During a recent Fort Raleigh earthworks restoration project, the students recovered numerous artifacts, including pottery shards, musket balls, glassware, and coins.  Doug Stover, park historian, estimated the dates of the pottery shards to be pre- European and the coins were dated from 1700 to 1900.

Doula Training on the Outer Banks
Studies have shown that doulas help decrease the cesarean rate. With one of the highest cesarean rates in North Carolina, there is a great need for more doulas. The Outer Banks needs local doulas! A doula is a person who attends the birthing family before, during, and just after the birth of the baby. The certified doula is trained to deliver emotional support from home to hospital, ease the transition into the hospital environment, and be there through changing hospital shifts and alternating provider schedules. The doula serves as an advocate, labor coach, and information source to give the mother and her partner the added comfort of additional support throughout the entire labor.
