COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN SUPPORT MEAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM ON HATTERAS ISLAND
Commercial fishermen are donating fish to help feed homebound Hatteras Island residents every week.  Since late June, local fishermen have provided fish for the Friday lunches delivered to clients of Hatteras Meals, Inc.

Hatteras Meals currently provide daily lunches for 35 Hatteras Island residents who are homebound, convalescing from surgery, or dealing with extenuating medical conditions.  The program is a local adaptation of the national "Meals on Wheels" program, but does not receive funding through the national organization and relies on local and county support.

Hatteras Connection, a community-based development project, pulled together commercial fishermen and other volunteers to organize the fish donation project.

Jim Lyons of Buxton volunteered to clean, pack, and deliver the fish on Friday mornings for preparation by Edith Byrd at Diamond Shoals Restaurant in Buxton.   Jeff Aiken, owner of Jeffrey's Seafood in Hatteras, offered use of his cold storage facility, and Gary Weigel, manager of Jeffrey's Seafood, is overseeing the collection of fish from commercial fishermen.  Lyons said the fish donation project has gotten off to a good start, with fishermen developing an informal network for the rotation of donations among the fleet.  He also said lunches featuring local fish are proving popular with many Hatteras Meals clients.

Hatteras Connection is dedicated to sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship and is committed to working to ensure a future for new generations of watermen on Hatteras Island.

Doula Training on the Outer Banks
Studies have shown that doulas help decrease the cesarean rate. With one of the highest cesarean rates in North Carolina, there is a great need for more doulas. The Outer Banks needs local doulas! A doula is a person who attends the birthing family before, during, and just after the birth of the baby. The certified doula is trained to deliver emotional support from home to hospital, ease the transition into the hospital environment, and be there through changing hospital shifts and alternating provider schedules. The doula serves as an advocate, labor coach, and information source to give the mother and her partner the added comfort of additional support throughout the entire labor.

Red Nose in July
There has been a rumor that RUDOLPH has been sighted on the Outer Banks recently!!! When he was interviewed by the press, he said that he was getting ready for CHRISTMAS IN JULY, a unique fund-raiser sponsored by the Outer Banks Relief Foundation. Chairman of the CHRISTIMAS IN JULY fund raiser, Julie Walter, Marketing Manager for Homes & Land of the Outer Banks magazine has announced that the promotion is planned for the weekend of July 10-12 and will see many businesses and their employees sporting RED NOSES !!! Containers will be available and donations will be collected for the benefit of the OBRF, whose mission is to assist our community when health crises strike. The focus of this endeavor will be to involve our tourist-guests in having some fun for a most worthy cause!!!

If you have a business (be it financial, dry cleaning, restaurant, yo-yo manufacturing, whatever!) and would like to participate in a terrifically enjoyable event, contact the OBRF office at 261-2004, or email us.ckelley@outerbanksrelieffoundation.com.
In the last five years, the Outer Banks Relief Foundation has provided over $300,000 to over 200 local citizens in need.  Financial assistance amounts range from $500 to $5000.  Some examples of those situations are individuals stricken with cancer, or with serious blood or nerve disorders, or spinal injuries, or MS.  OBRF works closely with the other charitable and helping organizations here in our Outer Banks community, in order to coordinate our support and services to the needy, to not duplicate our efforts, and to maximize our collective resources as much a possible, particularly in these challenging economic times.
