Rain Garden Planting
rain garden
The Whalehead Club will soon have two rain gardens!  Not only will these gardens be beautiful to look at but they will serve as a natural means of controlling drainage issues in two areas of Currituck Heritage Park. Want to learn more about rain gardens and their benefits?  Join Mike Doxey, garden designer from the county department of soil and water us as we plant them on Thursday May 27th at 9:00 am.

Rain gardens are a way for homeowners as well as businesses to participate in the reduction of polluted runoff, simply by planting a specialized garden. Rain Gardens are an infiltration technique - water is captured in a garden that features native plantings, and the water has a chance to slowly filter into the ground rather than run off into the storm sewer, stream, or river.

Hands Across The Sand
hands
On  June 26, join in a nationwide "Hands Across the Sand" protest. Young and old are invited to participate.  Sponsored by Surfrider and Sierra Club, based on the highly successful Florida event. All you need to do is show up at Bonnett Street in Nags Head around 11 am. (Milepost 10.5).  At noon, everyone lines up to create 'a line in the sand' against offshore drilling and for renewable energy.  Lock hands and stand there for 10 minutes in silent protest.  Pat each other on the back and proceed about your daily lives. Bonnett Street has a big parking lot, plus surrounding accesses and right-of-way parking for overflow. (There's also NHES up the road.) In one day, we can physically show Dare Co., North Carolina - possibly the whole country - that coastal residents are standing up against offshore drilling's risks to our way our life.
