Words and More Words

Elgin's Corollary To Miller's Law
In order for other people to understand what you are saying, you must make
it possible for them to apply Miller's Law to your speech.
People can't assume that what you're saying is true if you talk so quickly,
or so vaguely, or in such impenetrable jargon, that they can't even
begin to understand what you're trying to tell them. They can't assume that
it's true if your body language contradicts your words. The short-term memory (also called working memory), which people use to keep
track of incoming perceptions, has a limited capacity. It can only handle
about seven chunks of information at one time; and anything that isn't processed
within roughly thirty seconds goes straight into long-term memory unindexed
-- meaning that it's not retrievable except by chance. You can help your
listener process your language more effectively by signaling what's ahead,
whenever that's possible and appropriate. .

Weekend of Shag Dancing to benefit the Community Care Clinic of
Dare
May 7 - 8, Live Music! DJ's! Dance Classes! Pirate's Cove Featuring: Jim Quick and Coastline, Ed Timberlake and David Jones, Sam and Lisa West. The Carolina Shag is a form of Swing Dance that developed
during the 1930's and 40's, combining nimble footwork with upbeat rhythm and
blues (known as "Beach Music"). Shagging originated at open-air beach
parties on the North and South Carolina coasts. The reason the footwork is so smooth and understated was to prevent sand
from being kicked in your partner's face! Check event information online. Price: $45 per person which includes entry to all dance
events (except classes) throughout the weekend. Tickets may be purchased online or at the following locations: Gray's Family
Department Store, Garden
Deli & Pizzaria, and BJ's
Carolina Caf. All locations will accept cash or check made payable to Community
Care Clinic of Dare. Volunteers are also
needed, please contact Christine Jackle
at (252) 202-9033 or volunteers@shagobx.org.The
Community Care Clinic of Dare was established to serve the
lower-income, uninsured persons living or working in Dare county by

Operation Inasmuch in Currituck
May 1Curritu ck churches
involved in Operation Inasmuch commit to a one-day work project in our community. Among the projects being done are yard work, home
repair, and automotive safety checks. Operation Inasmuch is
directed toward those in need: families without the resources to do
something that needs to be done. This includes single mothers, the
unemployed, chronically ill, the elderly, wives with husbands on
military deployment, and so on. You can watch this video to see what other churches have done in North Carolina. You can request help by contacting Moyock Baptist Church, 252-435-6230m, St. Luke's Episcopal Church 252-435-1055, or Hebron & Mt. Zion United Methodist Churches 252-453-3559. Cost is what you can afford and not a penny more. If
you have the financial resources to pay for some or all of the
materials, we'll ask you to do that. But if your situation is such that
buying the materials is beyond your means, the materials will be
donated. If you're physically able to help with the project,
we'd like for you to work with the team. But if that's not possible,
don't worry, we'll take care of the labor.
If you can help, Contact one of the
sponsoring churches listed on the Currituckoiam.org website. They'll
assign you to a team and let you know what you need to do.T A Volunteer
Dinner will be held at Coinjock Baptist Church that evening as part of
a county-wide celebration of the OIAM workday.
