Food for Thought:
Fueling Brainpower for Kids
Hunger impedes children's ability to think, learn and develop. The
school breakfast and lunch program feed children at school but not on
weekends. Recognizing the tremendous need, Food for Thought was born. This unique all-volunteer community non-profit organization,
established in December 2006, is dedicated to reducing hunger and
academic risk facing elementary children in Dare County by providing
healthy meals to build strong minds.
How? By providing nutritious and child-pleasing nonperishable
breakfasts, lunches and snacks for elementary children who meet
specific family criteria* in Dare County on the weekends and holidays
during the school year.
More than 16 church and civic organizationsand one school group provide
over 330 active volunteers while 18 area businesses share an array of
in-kind services and material support. Call Loismary Hoehne, 252-480-0036 or e-mail loismarya@embarqmail.com.

Words and More Words
To understand what another person is saying, you must assume that it is true and try to imagine what it could be true of.
Applying
Miller's Law is not easy. We are so used to trying to get our message
across, and judging and interpreting the meaning of what other people
say that we tend to respond too quickly, often without having any
signficant understanding of the other person. If there is a single "golden rule" of communication, this may be it. The proper response when
someone says, "My toaster has been talking to me!" is to give the speaker
your full attention, ask, "What has it been saying?", and then listen carefully.

Cesarean Awareness Month in North
Carolina
On April 1, 2010 Governor Bev Perdue issued a
proclamation naming April 2010 as Cesarean Awareness Month. The proclamation states that "maternal-child health is improved
by preventing unwarranted cesareans through education, support during recovery,
and considering vaginal birth after cesarean." The North Carolina State Department of Health has reported
that the cesarean rate in 2008 is the highest ever reported in North Carolina
with a rate of 31.3 percent. Cesarean rates in North Carolina have risen for ten
consecutive years and are alarmingly higher than the 10-15% average
recommended by the World Health Organization, causing unnecessary and avoidable
risk to both mother and baby. A recent report from Amnesty Internationalconnects high cesarean rates to rising maternal mortality in the US. Cesarean rates are influenced by non-medical factors including individual
philosophy and training, convenience of doctor or patient, the patients
socioeconomic status, peer pressure, fear of litigation, and financial gain. Cesarean rates at local hospitals are climbing, ranging from 32.3% at Albemarle Hospital to 40.4% at The Outer
Banks Hospital. Women who are seeking information about how to avoid a
cesarean, have a VBAC, or are recovering from a cesarean can visit www.ican-online.org for
more information or to locate one of the six North Carolina ICAN chapters
in Jacksonville, Greenville, Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad and the Outer
Banks.
