Chart: Comparing Health Reform Bills: Democrats and Republicans 2009, Republicans 1993

By Maggie Mertens
Kaiser Health News Staff Writer
Feb. 24, 2010

The proposal President Barack Obama unveiled on Monday is based largely on the bill passed by the Democratic Senate on Dec. 24, 2009, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  It has some similarities to a GOP proposal sponsored by Sen. John Chafee, R-R.I., during the Clinton presidency, the Health Equity and Access Reform Today Act of 1993.

This chart compares those two bills with the Nov. 3, 2009 proposal from House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, the Common Sense Health Care Reform and Affordability Act.

Heart Awareness Month
The Dare County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation at the February 1 meeting calling on residents to increase their awareness and understanding of heart disease and to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs. The proclamation wasamerican heart prepared by the Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) with Health Education Supervisor, Laura Willingham presenting the document at the meeting on behalf of the Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks, Heart Disease and Stroke Task Force. The proclamation cited controllable risk factors that, if not addressed, can lead to heart disease such as smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, high cholesterol and blood pressure.
These factors, as well as some factors that cannot be controlled such as age and family history, have led to heart disease becoming the second leading cause of death in Dare County accounting for 23% of all deaths.
