Peace and Justice Interfaith Coalition Screening Banished.
A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. Banished tells the story of these communities and their black descendants, who return to learn their shocking histories. In Forsyth County, Georgia, where a thousand black residents were expelled, the film explores the question of land fraudulently taken, and follows some descendants in their quest to uncover the real story of their family's land. In Pierce City, Missouri, a man has designed his own creative form of reparation-he wishes to disinter the remains of his great-grandfather, who was buried there before the banishment. And in Harrison, Arkansas, home to the headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan, a white community struggles with their town's legacy of hate.
Film will be shown at the Holy Redeemer Church in Kitty Hawk, February 16 at 7:00 pm. Free to publc

Thank you from Operation Santa
CommonGood Enews received a thank you for contribution to 2009 Operation Operation Santa Claus. I wanted to pass that along to readers who stepped forward. Financial gifts and sponsors helped
to provide Christmas gifts for 15 foster children and food baskets for 45
elderly citizens of Currituck. Many of you sponsored children and you helped
328 families with 627 children have a Merry Christmas. Also, 11 disabled adults received gifts. This was a year of unprecedented
need. Thanks to media support, it was also a year of unprecedented giving. Thank you for being one of the contributors
who make this program possible each year.
As Currituck citizens continue to
experience difficult financial times throughout 2009, please consider making a
donation to one of our community partners that are also front line
responders. A brochure is enclosed for
Interfaith Community Outreach. This organization helps meet needs where
Social Services has no funding. Thank you again for your faithful
and generous support of Operation Santa Claus. From
Kathlyn S. Romm, Director, Currituck County of Social Services.
