A key part of both the plan and the information gathering process is citizen input. Currituck County residents are being asked to complete an online survey. The final plan, a Comprehensive Transportation Plan, will provide a 'road map' for a sustainable future in Currituck County. The purpose of this plan is to identify solutions to roadway and other transportation problems and to help keep traffic in Currituck County moving! Fill out the survey by January 20th. Outer Banks Cancer Support Group
The Outer Banks Cancer Support Group was founded in 1989 by the late Alice Kelly. Alice was an Outer Banks local who found through her cancer journey, the lack of services and help in Dare County. The group is a non-profit organization and is open to any resident in Dare County, whether they are a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver or just want to be part of a support group. The group's objective is to provide moral and emotional support and temporary financial assistance to those going through the various stages of cancer. Transportation subsidy is available to anyone who requests it and additional temporary financial help is available to those who have a true need. The group meets monthly on the first Monday at the Cancer Resource Center of The Outer Banks Hospital. Guest speakers are welcomed, bringing new knowledge and help to members and visitors.
The Outer Banks Cancer Support Group relies solely on donations from individuals, civic groups and local business owners along with two yearly fundraisers, The Alice Kelly Fishing Tournament and the Seascape Golf Tournament. All funds raised are used to help local Dare County residents. If you are a cancer survivor, family member or friend of someone who is a cancer survivor, the Outer Banks Cancer Support group extends a warm welcome to join the other members and share your experience with them. A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, and includes a newly diagnosed person, as well as a long-term survivor. Volunteers are always welcome to help the group with fund-raising and for ongoing support of the cancer community of Dare County. OBX Green Drinks
January 14 @ 7pm, Outer Banks Brewing Station. Guest speaker this month is Ben Watkins, talking to about Shade Grown Coffee. Sign up to be on the mailing list: OBXgreendrinks@gmail.com. This group is part of Green Drinks International which encourages people getting together - mostly for people working on environmental issues, but anyone can come -- people from environment groups, business, government, academia and as individuals. There is no 'us and them'. Newcomers and introduce them to others in the group. All attendees commit to meeting new people at every session and not just sticking with people they already know.
In 1989, at a pub called the Slug and Lettuce in Northern London, Edwin Datschefski was sitting with his green design colleagues Yorick Benjamin and Paul Scott when he noticed an enviro-minded acquaintance at a nearby table. As it turned out, the friend was sitting with a few of his own eco-conscious mates, so they pulled some tables together. And so a movement was born. The concept evolved into Green Drinks and now it's global. In 2001, Datschefski created an official Web site, and it has since spread across the world. See www.greendrinks.org for the latest city count and a list of countries. Cities with Green Drinks groups include: Sofia, Bulgaria | laayoune, Morocco | Maui Hawaii HI, USA | NORTH PLAINS OR, USA | Beaverton Hillsboro OR, USA | Staten Island NY, USA | Malibu CA, USA | |
Girl Scout Cookie Program: It's More Than Just the Cookies in the Box
The 2010 Girl Scout Cookie Program begins on Saturday, January 9 with Girl Scouts going door-to-door to take orders. Cookie delivery begins the third week of February. New to the cookie line-up for 2010 is the Thank U Berry Munch cookie filled with real cranberries and creamy white fudge chips. Returning favorites are Samoas, Lemon Chalet Crmes, Do-Si-dos, Dulce de Leche, Tagalongs, Trefoils, and Thin Mints - all for only $3.50 per box.
When you purchase Girl Scout cookies, you're purchasing so much more than the cookies in the box. You're making it possible for a girl attend summer camp. You're helping a local troop raise funds for a service project that will benefit an entire community. You're helping a girl learn communication and budgeting skills. You are helping the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. You can also purchase cookies for a great cause through the Gift of Caring program. Girl Scouts donate boxes of cookies to local hospitals, shelters, and other worthy causes. Through the Cookies from Home program girls ask customers to purchase cookies that will go directly to the military. Each year the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast teams up with the USO to facilitate the delivery of Girl Scout cookies directly to our military men and women serving overseas or recovering in VA hospitals. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in the Cookies from Home program by purchasing cases of cookies for the military. To find Girl Scouts selling cookies near you, visit the Council's website at www.gsccc.org or call 1-800-77SCOUT.
