Currituck holiday dinnerCurrituck County High School will be hosting a county-wide Christmas event on Tuesday, December 22nd for our students and their families-especially those who are in need of assistance. Through this event, they are taking a community driven approach to planning an opportunity for our neighbors to be served Christmas Dinner, as well as enjoy entertainment and fellowship with their fellow community members.

In these financially worrisome times, without community support, some of our local families would not have the essential basics that many of us take for granted. Any donations you would be able to extend towards this charitable event would be appreciated. Please contact organizers at 252.453.0014 to let them know how you'd like to be involved in this special event. With your support, we know that our most needy community members can be brought together for an evening that will surely be appreciated for years to come.

Having Trouble with Your Vision?
Every seven minutes, someone in America will permanently lose his or her eyesight. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, there are already over ten million Americans who have problems seeing, and the number is growing at an alarming rate ... among older people it is expected to more than double by the year 2030.

If you are having trouble seeing, call the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind to learn more about services available to you. Remember that blindness can affect every one of us. Angelo Sonnesso, Social Worker for the Blind (Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank, and Perquimans),  is willing to help regardless of your county of residence.   Contact  Angelo Sonnesso M.A. M.S., Phone: 252-338-2126

Free H1N1 Vaccination Available to All
The Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) has announced that the H1N1 vaccine is now available to anyone who wants to receive the vaccine. "Our focus over the past couple of months has been in providing vaccine to those in the target groups and ensuring the public was educated on ways to prevent contracting influenza. Now that the quantity of vaccine available is greater and the demand for the vaccine from the target groups has been met, we are pleased to provide the H1N1 vaccine to everyone in effort to protect the community from flu outbreak," states Anne Thomas, Health Director.
While the number of H1N1 cases may be going down, the rate of influenza illness is still high, and we can expect another wave of influenza as we reach the peak of the regular flu season. If you have not yet been vaccinated, public health officials are strongly encouraging you to do so. H1N1 vaccinations will be offered on a first come, first served basis on:
Thursday, December 17 at the Dare County Administrative Building in Manteo from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Thursday, December 17 at Dare County Department of Public Health in Frisco from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, December 21 at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, December 30 at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills from 9 a.m. to 11:30 am and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
There is no cost for the H1N1 flu vaccine at this time.

Operation Santa still needs sponsors.
operation santaLast Thursday it looked like the lack of sponsors would mean children in more than 400 Currituck families could wake up Christmas morning to an empty tree. Operation Santa Claus - the Christmas assistance program operated by the Currituck Department of Social Services - had more than six times as many applications for help as it had sponsors giving it.
For Stephanie Bradley, child protective services unit supervisor for Currituck DSS, the need this Christmas is unprecedented.  "This is the highest number of applications we've ever had in our history and it's directly related to our economy," she said. "I think it's everywhere, not just in Currituck."  In 2006, Currituck DSS had only 74 applications for Christmas assistance. This year, Operation Santa Claus has received more than 470 applications for help.  Applicants are still coming."

While small children are easier to buy for, teenagers also need the message of love through a gift at Christmas. They're the most difficult to sponsor because they're more expensive to buy for.  "For sponsorship, we'll give (the sponsor) how ever many people they can handle," Stephanie said. "We give them (the kids') ages and their wish list. When they buy (a gift), we ask them to wrap it and we call the family to come pick it up."  Potential donors should not try to do more than they can afford. That way, each child can have the best Christmas possible. "If people want to sponsor, they should only sponsor one or two kids so that child can have a nice Christmas,"

Following announcements in the paper and a piece on Channel 3, sponsorship increased and Channel 3 offered to set up a phone bank.  More than $7,500 was raised.  You can watch the video on line. There still remain about 100 children who need sponsorship. Anyone wishing to make a donation to Operation Santa Claus or to sponsor a family should call the Currituck Department of Social Services at 232-3083 and mention Operation Santa Claus. All funds collected will go directly to meet the needs of children, particularly those in the foster care system.

BENEFIT for HATTERAS ISLAND FOOD PANTRY & HATTERAS MEALS

The Hatteras Connection seafood fundraiser to benefit Hatteras Island Food Pantry and Hatteras Meals, Inc. raised $2940.   The money will be divided equally between the two non-profit food organizations.  In addition to the monetary donations, dinner guests contributed enough non-perishable food items and personal care products to fill the back of one pick-up truck and one station wagon.  Those items were delivered to the Food Pantry Wednesday morning.

The Methodist Men's Food Pantry provided 2475 people on Hatteras Island with more than 60,000 meals last year and helped 160 families with medical and housing expenses.  Hatteras Meals, Inc. serves daily lunches to as many as 45 persons.  Volunteers deliver lunches to people who are homebound, convalescing from surgery, or dealing with extenuating medical conditions.
