Interfaith Community Outreach

December 2009
If we don't have enough for ourselves, we may be poor in material wealth.
But when we don't have enough to share, then we are truly poor in spirit.
Greetings!

Interfaith Community Outreach has been successful because of the generosity of people like you. It is only through your contribution of time and money that we meet our mission to assist the working poor facing an emergency crises. As you know, unemployment and job layoffs are rising. Medical care may be hard to find and even harder to pay for.  The result is a growing number of families in crises as they try to stretch their limited income to put food on the table, pay rent and utilities, repair the only car, and meet medical expenses.  Many of these people turn to Interfaith Community Outreach. We have served this community for almost six years and are committed to continue serving, but the growing need has outpaced our donations and funding.  I am writing you today to ask your help in continuing this important work.

In Faith,

Ginger Candelora,

Difficult Times
Families in Need
imageworkerWe only need to talk with neighbors and friends to know many are out of work or have been laid off.  The evidence is not just anecdotal. In September 2008, 1,364 Dare County residents received assistance from the food and nutrition program. In September 2009, that number increased by 58.9% to 2,168 residents.

Bridging the Gap

Dare and Currituck Communities have always be strong supporters of
Interfaith Community Outreach, which was founded in 2004 by a small number of volunteers from local churches. The mission was and is to assist working poor facing an emergency crisis.Interfaith Community Outreach has faithfully worked towards bridging the gap, providing emergency services  and referrals to people on the Outer Banks and surrounding areas who have no other place to turn for help.

sunriseThe organization has now grown to well over 100 volunteers from more than 40 churches in Dare and Currituck Counties. Since its founding, the ICO has provided over a half a million dollars in direct outreach to those in need for rent, mortgage, utilities, transportation and more.

"Ask friends and family for help - Instead of receiving socks, or another sweater, this year for Christmas, ask your friends and family to make a donations to ICO."

ICO Gap Services
Need is Growing
Even with food assistance, folks can't make ends meet. There isn't enough to pay the rent or utility bill, repair the car, and afford health care. The emergency gap is getting wider and deeper. So far more than 900 families have been provided assistance in 2009. That is nearly twice as many as assisted in 2008.  That means in the last nine months,  2153 individual lives touched, 115 families not evicted, 7 families did not have their homes foreclosed, 215 families did not have their power turned off.  Working with Currituck and Dare Department of Social Services we served the most vulnerable in our area!

ICO has limited resources and cannot continue to meet the high number of requests. The Board of Directors has elected to reduce levels of ICO financial assistance. Community support for ICO continues to be as strong as ever.  But community need has increased by much more. ICO will continue to go into the emergency financial reserves as it strives to meet growing needs.
 Remember the Less Fortunate
Please Donate to ICO

We are turning to those who have given and are giving ICO financial support:  People like you - and churches, businesses and local governments. As you go through this holiday season, please remember those less off, less fortunate.  Yes, these are difficult times indeed. Yet the hard edges of our collective difficulties can be softened if we each  reach out in service to those in need.  The act of giving something away is a tangible way of acknowledging the gifts we have been given.

Checks can be made out to the Interfaith Community Outreach. All donations are tax deductible.

Please mail them to PO Box 838, Kitty Hawk NC.
