Meet the Author, Dr. Abby Sallenger.
Join the Friends Of Jockey's Ridge State Park On Monday, December 7 At 5:30-6:30 PM Visitor Center, Jockey's Ridge State Park. Hear the riveting story about "Island in a Storm" A 19th Century Disaster of a barrier island off the southern
coast As the oceans warm, what could be in store for us? Books will be available to purchase and have signed.
Abby Sallenger is an oceanographer who received his B.A. in
geology and Ph.D. in marine science from the University of Virginia. He is the
former chief scientist of the U.S. Geological Survey's Center for Coastal
Geology and is presently the leader of the USGS storm impact research group. As
an undergraduate at U.Va., Abby was a student athlete, playing four years of
intercollegiate football. Abby spent
many summers vacationing on the Outer Banks and in Southern Shores. He and his
wife live in Florida "Rarely does a book combine fascinating story-telling, regional
history, and a science lesson in one compelling package. Island in a Storm does
just that. The tale is more than 150 years old, but there are real lessons to
be learned for coastal communities on today's vulnerable barrier islands."

Festival of Trees
Festival of Trees is a unique community fundraiser that
supports programming, services, shelter, training, information and resources to
address domestic and sexual violence in the Outer Banks.
Festival of Trees brings together individuals, families,
businesses and organizations to celebrate the holiday season with twinkling
lights, festive musical performances, punch and homemade cookies, craft
activities for children, a visit with Santa complete with a souvenir photo, and
shopping for one-of-a-kind gifts. The culmination of
the Festival is an auction of donated,
decorated Christmas Trees and Holiday Objects at a catered Gala Holiday Social.
Participation
There are a variety
of ways to become involved in the Festival of Trees from sponsorship to
donating a tree to attending any one or all of the planned events. All of the
events are open to the public free of charge except for the Saturday evening
Gala Holiday Social and Benefit Auction, which requires purchase of a ticket to
attend. Festival of Trees is fresh and new each year - a not to be missed Outer
Banks holiday tradition!
Sponsorship

usually decorated around a theme and the Christmas Tree contributors bring
their decorations, gift certificates and gifts to the party where they will
carefully wire the lights and ornaments to the tree (the trees are delivered
intact to high bidders following the auction!). At the closed to the public
decorating party, complimentary pasta stations will be served. A cash bar is
available and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages will be served throughout
the evening. The decorated trees will be displayed to the public throughout the
Festival, and the lucky high bidder at the Benefit Auction on Saturday evening
will win the tree and all of the accompanying gifts and/or certificates.

Wreaths, tabletop trees, and other holiday objects are also
welcome additions to the auction. Past donations have included traditional

Happy Thanksgiving.
We celebrate the gifts of family and friends. We are grateful for our abundance, the beauty of this place, and smell of roasting turkey and sweet potatoes. Did you know that North Carolina produced 874,000,000 pounds of sweet potatoes in 2008. We raised 39,000,000 turkeys.
While we are thankful for what we have, we need to remember that not everyone currently shares these blessings.
A farmworker must pick and haul 125 buckets of sweet potatoes to earn
$50. **

Award to Laurie White, Maternal Health Nurse.
 The
North Carolina Perinatal Association awarded the 2009 Special Recognition award to Laurie White, RN, Maternal Health Nurse at
Dare County Department of Public Health. Laurie White has a long history of advocating for the health of mothers and babies in our
community. She has been with Dare County DPH for 15 years working with the maternal health
program and has been certified in completion of training for an enhanced nursing role in the care
of maternity patients. Dare County Department of Public Health annually serve approximately 362 women in the prenatal clinic. Over 44% of these patients are self pay, without health insurance. Many women will need an ultrasound during their pregnancy, but will not have one because of an inability to pay.
Laurie recognized this as a potential life hreatening barrier for the pregnant women andtheir babies. She advocated early on for a method of making services accessible to thosethat cannot pay starting with the excellent quality of care that she assures in the prenatal clinic. She then took the additional step of seeking out grant opportunities to provide
sonograms to pregnant women in our community who could not afford to pay for the test.Laurie secured funding through the Outer Banks Hospital Community Benefits andHealth Initiative Grants Program and contracted with local providers to provide reduced rate sonograms to women, who would otherwise not be able to have this vital service. Laurie coordinates this program by making appointments, tracking funding and payment,
and following up with patients. The result is early intervention and a potential positiveoutcome for the family.
As a result of Laurie's efforts to find funding for sonograms, over 200 women have had this simple diagnostic tool completed. In two and a half years of this program, the outcomes have been significant. Several multiple births were discovered allowing for early intervention in the pregnancy to assure positive deliveries. Many life threatening abnormalities including intrauterine growth retardation have been ameliorated and two clients were found to have significant fetal deformities which were inconsistent with life. As a result the ultrasound findings, these clients had access to increased health and emotional support through their loss and grief process.
