Volunteers needed for Seafood Fundraiser on Hattaras Island.
seafood hattaras paint
Hatteras Connection continues to work on the December seafood fundraiser.  They are still looking for chefs, prep cooks, servers, ticket salespeople, facility set-up helpers, clean-up helpers, greeters, and a backdrop musician. And, we are still accepting donations of seafood, paper goods, ingredients, drinks, and desserts.

This winter will stretch the resources of the island's charitable food organizations.  Last year the Food Pantry provided 2475 people with more than 60,000 meals and helped 160 families buy medicines and pay for rent and utilities.

Grant Writing Training Offered For Area Nonprofits

The Duke Nonprofit Management Training program is offering the class "Grant Proposals: Planning for Positive Results" with instructor Amy Montgomery  on Thursday November 19 at 9:00 AM at The Nature Conservancy offices at Nags Head Woods.   The class will run until 4:00 PM with an hour lunch break.
Does "grant writing" sound like a daunting task? Are you or could you be a grant writer? A grant writer is a passionate person on a mission to solve a problem or an unmet need. Successful grant writers know that writing is the easy part, especially if you have someone who will edit your work. Passion for your work is your number one tool to get funded. You know your target audience, what they need and how to help. With some solid research, careful and realistic planning, strong and strategic relationships, and a good editor, you can be a successful grant writer. Participants will finish this personalized course with a checklist and road map, definite Do's and Don'ts, and completely convinced that they have what it takes to be a successful grant writer.
Amy Montgomery earned her Master's in Health Education from East Carolina University. Beginning her career in public health, Montgomery had to learn the ins and outs of getting grants to be able to fund important community health programs. With over 10 years of grant writing experience in the areas of public health, education, and human services, Montgomery has earned millions of dollars in grant funds for projects such as mobile dental services for children and affordable housing for teachers. Montgomery is currently the Executive Director of the Dare Education Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit.
The class fee is $98.  Scholarships are available through the Outer Banks Community foundation.

Health Reform: Side by Side Comparison

kaiser
Achieving Comprehensive health reform has emerged as a leading priority of the President and Congress. President Obama has outlined eight principles for health reform, seeking to address not only the 45 million people who lack health insurance, but also rising health care costs and lack of quality. In Congress, a number of comprehensive reform proposals have been announced as the debate proceeds over how to overhaul the health care system.

The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation focusing on the major health care issues facing the U.S., as well as the U.S. role in global health policy.  Unlike grant-making foundations, Kaiser develops and runs its own research and communications programs, sometimes in partnership with other non-profit research organizations or major media companies. They  serve as a non-partisan source of facts, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public. The Kaiser Family Foundation is not associated with Kaiser Permanente or Kaiser Industries.

Kaiser provides an interactive side-by-side tool  compares the leading comprehensive reform proposals across a number of key characteristics and plan components. Included in this side-by-side are proposals for moving toward universal coverage that have been put forward by the President and Members of Congress. In an effort to capture the most important proposals, they have included those that have been formally introduced as legislation as well as those that have been offered as draft proposals or as policy options. It will be regularly updated to reflect changes in the proposals and to incorporate major new proposals as they are announced. This side-by-side offers a summary of the major components of these proposals; detailed descriptions of provisions relating to Medicare and Medicaid are also available online.

Watch and Wash Toys in Flood-Water

flood bikeThe Dare County Department of Public Health is issuing a health advisory following the November nor'easter. Parents also need to help children avoid illness. Children should not be allowed to play in flood water areas. Children's hands should be washed frequently (always before meals), and they should not be allowed to play with flood-water contaminated toys that have not been disinfected. Toys can be disinfected using a solution of one cup of bleach in five gallons of water. More information can be found at www.cdc.gov.
